Reservation for one: Truck stop chain offers a pay-to-park solution By Clarissa Kell-Holland, Land Line staff writer
As truck drivers continue to struggle to find safe and secure parking spaces daily, one major truck stop chain is rolling out a new pay-to-park solution at some of its locations around the country starting Nov. 1.

TravelCenters of America is the operator of TA and Petro Stopping Centers branded travel centers. Tom Liutkus, the company’s vice president of marketing and public relations, told Land Line that the average cost for drivers to reserve a spot using the “Reserve-It” parking system will range from $7 to $12 per spot. Drivers with oversize loads will be required to pay for two spaces.

“The prices range generally by site based on total number of spaces, how many reserve spaces and how quickly the lot historically fills,” he said.

Liutkus said the system will be available at 48 TAs and Petro sites on Nov. 1, with another 26 opening by the end of 2012. The participating sites will set aside approximately 5 percent of their spaces for the Reserve-It program.

Each time drivers want to reserve a space, they must call 1-855-VIP-PARK or notify the fuel desk at the site and have their credit card handy. Liutkus said drivers’ credit card information will not be kept on file, and they will be asked each time for their credit card information.

He said the check-in time for drivers is 4 p.m., who then have the space until 3 p.m. the following day.

    Sure I would.....

If it wasn't right next to the shop, next to the fuel islands where I get ALL of the truckstop noise and headlights in my window all night long.

You could pull your curtains closed to avoid that problem.

MN, i see it as another opportunity to take money from drivers in the long run

just like toll roads, it will result in increased operating costs, but not increased revenue for the drivers

you think if 5% of the parking spots are profitable, they wont make it 10% then 50%? remember how IdleAire took over the parking spots?

Well worth it. Look at t a Chandler Nc that t a fills fast. If I know I'm going to be in late I can call and reserve the spot. It is genius and another money making idea from a corporate truck stop.

I don't see it as a bad idea. Remember, it is tax deductible, as a business owner.

tax deductible to save you "how much".

I don't need to spend $12 to have people drive by my truck and shine lights on my curtains.

thats a good way of looking at it

they can charge us for everything, tolls on every road, more in fuel taxes, more in road taxes, shucks charge us to breathe, it will be a CARB tax deduction

after all of these deductions, will i have enough to feed my family?

It's a money grab and I'm surprised Pilot/Flying J didn't come up with it first. I use TA/Petro's predominantly and have noted the spots are unused for the most part. Would I use them if I was desperate? You betcha!

I never spend money, just to get a tax deduction. But, when I do spend money on my business, you better believe I will take the deduction.
