Im asking on the behave of my cousin that will be taking his test next month to finally get his CDL. While it's a pretty standard test I was wondering who can tell me the exact details of whats involved in the road test in Newport. I know there will be a pretrip and course driving then a final road test but I've been told that they are pretty tough on you and will mark off for anything. Anything will help for him because he has studied like crazy and he's afraid he will fail because they may do it differently than most other places.

Either the applicant has the skills to pass or they do not. The test is standard wherever you go. The standards come from the federal regs. Basically 4 graded left turns, 4 graded right turns, passing through 2 graded controlled intersections and 2 graded un controlled intersections, going over some RXR tracks and under a marked overhead clearance. There are three phases of the CDL skills test. pre-trip (includes the in cab air brake test) the road test and the backing skills test.

If he has studied and practiced, he should be ready. I took mine in Utah so I can't say exactly what that test entails but if you're ready, you're ready. Just take it and see what happens. If you fail, you should have a good idea why and be able to come back later and knock it out. Good luck!

I got my CDL originally in Arkansas. First time at Newport. Make sure that the air brakes will pass their test. If it doesn't, then u have to go back cuz they won't let you continue. (this was thru c-1 school back in 2004). Truck school got truck air fixed and then 2nd shot was at the 65th street DMV. Make sure your friend doesn't tweak the curb or stall the truck or coast longer than the length of the truck and I am sure that he will pass with flying colors. Good luck!:biggrin_25526:

Well i didn't say he didn't have the skills to pass or not... I was just asking what was involved at that testing center. I've seen different testing sites do different things. I just wanted to know so I could possible help him focus on the things he will need to pass and not the random crap that doesn't matter.

Mine was in Mi, but at the testing lot i had to do pre trip and in cab and air brakes, then straight line backing then alley docking and the making a right turn around a cone as close as you can without knocking it over. Then road test was about 20 min long they made me do an emergency stop on side if road make sure flashers are on while stopped and kept on while pulling back into traffic till up to speed. When going under bridges gad to tell him the height of bridge make few left turns, right turns no curb hitting and show him i could down shift as well as up shift, and not letting truck to roll while taking off pretty simple here, basically what i learned in cdl school.

I went to Newport two years ago for my CDL! I rented a truck that sits on the other side of the road from them! Old IH 9speed pup truck with a 38 foot flatbed! Most of the time pretrip then they take you ON THE ROAD First! 4 righthand turn only two left turns! There are NO overhead passes ya go under, Ya do a small run on the highway no RXRtracks! The driver course was no big deal! BTW I went a a 1/4 of a mile in no gear! New truck for me. STILL PASSED

I took mine in Pine Bluff, AR about a month ago. Stop with bumper between lines, straight back, right hand turn close to cone, backing serpentine, 45 alley dock. The guy giving me the test seemed pretty easy going, but a friend of mine failed his pre-trip the same morning. Make sure you use the terms "Secure" and "Properly Attached", also, the info both of us studdied didn't list valve stems.... 5 points if you forget it. KNOW, KNOW, KNOW the air break test! My friend coasted on his second time and he was warned if he did it again that he would fail. The driving test there has a RR track, but he told me it was a dead track and to act like it wasn't even there, that it was only used for the school bus test. On the pre-trip, name everything you say, and use the right words. Don't get stressed. Take you time.
