Technically, your weight is rounded to the nearest 500# mark. So, as long as you're not over 250 over, you're fine.

However, on steers, I'm ALWAYS over 12,000 and have never had an issue. My friend has an international 9400i and had his 5th wheel slid up all the way and was at 13,000+ in Oregon once and had DOT come out to look at his tires on the scale before letting him go.

Not once in 5 years have I had a scale want to look at my axle rating.

Who told you this because if a scale write you a ticket they will not round it to the nearest 500

Interstate is 20,000 on steers if you don't go over axle and tire rating. Look at your tires and I bet you have 6250's if not 7125's. Run it.

250 miles and you'll burn enough fuel off too.

    Back or forward? :)

We have 12K burned into our brain because of 34+34+12=80. So the 12 is what is left over.

I think a couple states are 14 but most are 18-20. But with steers the legal limit is going to be axle and tire rating. You should know what your rating is.

Well said. Most people have that 12,000 burned into their brain and go into spasms if the weight goes above that. Others here explained it pretty good also. Check weight ratings of steer axles, tires, and look at overall gross weight.

Arkansas is 12,000. Other states are to the capacity of the tires, wheels or axle, whichever is least.
    Effectively, 12,360 for most trucks.
Highway scales weigh in 20# increments and are legal to 1/10th of 1% of the rated capacity. Most platform highway scales are rated to 200,000#, so that means there is a 200# window they will leave you alone if you keep your mouth shut and don't anger the scalemaster.

Slide the 5th wheel and be done with it..... I'm guessing you are pulling a van trailer??? ALL VAN PULLERS should have a slideable 5th wheel, it's the nature of the beast.
