They would go under your medical deductions, not work related deductions.

So hearing-aids can be claimed as a medical tax deduction? I wasn't aware of that. I wear them, and need to replace them. I've been holding off due to the expense. When I first got them about 10 yrs ago, they were only $1k each for a total cost of $2k. Wasn't driving a truck, and the work I was doing didn't require them. Now I find out they have went up over 100%, it's going to cost me around $5,200 to replace them.

Under the 1040A the section for medical expenses deduction can be deducted above the % of total medical bills. I am not positive because I haven't done itemization for quite some time, but they use a percentage based on your AGI and anything above that amount is deductible.

    Example:

    AGI 40,000 x 7% = 2800

So any medical expenses above $2800 is deductible.

Recently got some new hearing aids called " Lyric" I can sleep in them, shower in them and they don't have to be replaced but every 3 - 4 months and also you can't even see them in your ears because they are put in deep into the canal. I must say these are the best I have had for hearing and comfort but as far as price its a biotch! ($3800) for 1 year but I guess you get what you pay for.

So are the battery's I buy store brands as they are cheaper but last as long as name brand but I save the receipt by the end of the year they add up to 150 - 200.

To the original OP who told you you need hearing aids to pass the physical and have you had an actual hearing test ? I have had a hearing aid for 6 years was told almost 20 years ago that I needed them in the last 4 years I have had 4 dot physicals this year was the first time they marked hearing aid required it is also the first time the lady doing the whisper test had a heavy foreign accent.

While I am in no way doubting you, it would be interesting to know what your long form physical reports for "Section 4: Hearing." The form has places for the examiner to either list the distances at which forced whispers could be heard for each ear or to record the decibel values if an audiometer is used for the test. It may well be that your examiner chooses to "mask" the test as normal conversation to alleviate possibly uncomfortable situations for some patients. Not saying that you are one of those; this just might be their normal practice.
