Keep in mind, it is a job.
And safety it's freakin awesome when safety uses a computer to monitor what you're doing. That way instead of a blanket "safety" message that may or may not apply to you it can be tied to what you're actually doing.

herein lies the problem
its AWESOME to you to be able to monitor what a driver is doing,
in your job, i imagine you come to work in your car, you are probably a salaried employee, you get to do basically the same thing every day, and you leave, go home, maybe read some reports, play with the kids and go to bed
no one is monitoring your every move
now, lets make you an hourly employee, from the time you leave the wife in the morning............except, now you wont be home for a week or more
and you have 40hrs a week to work, you will get paid only for the work you do
bathroom, you have to punch out
telephone calls you have to punch out
picking your nose, you have to punch out
you only get paid for the work you do, and that was determined by your "safety manager" so for you to type a one page report, safety said it will take 10 minutes to type a one page report
but your printer jammed, so you had to change the cartridge, took you 15 minutes, plus the original 10, which wasnt 10 minutes in the first place, everyone knows it takes 12 minutes to type that one page report, but you will only get paid for the 10
bottom line, it took 27min to type that one page letter, and you only got paid for 10,
on top of that, while you were checking your email at your desk, you got a letter from your daughter, it had a link in the letter, you clicked it (your computer automatically logged you out of work because you clicked a link from your daughter), the link took 10 minutes to load (too many people on the network, slow download speed)
now you are docked another 10 minutes
and this is how your day goes, ALL DAY, EVERY DAY
and you have your "safety manager" monitoring everything you do, critiquing everything you do
and now at 5pm, you are finished your legal 8hr day but you cannot go home, you have to sit in the office (still under the eye of your safety manager, who thinks its awesome he can watch your every move, so he can maximize his company's profits and reduce risk)
and you go to the cafeteria, get a stale sandwich and you watch the clock until it is time for you to punch back in tomorrow morning
and if all of your work is done at the end of the week, you MAY go home if time permits, but be back at your desk monday morning to be monitored for all your work, that you only get paid for 60% of

Numerous people running E-logs have already posted saying they knowingly BREAK the HOS regulations even though they run E-logs. So like I have stated how do they have to do with making drivers more compliant within the HOS regs? If you can slowly move the truck while being logged in under SLEEPER BERTH then you have just violated the HOS regulations, Correct? Therefore the sleeper berth provision needs to be reset and started all over but how many E-log guys want to do that? Just because a select few think they should be forced and that they will CHANGE THE WORLD of trucking doesn't mean they will. Really quick they will not get mandated upon us all as they will not be able to force owner operators to spend the unneeded money. This will be tied up in courts for a long time.

Better yet, you can go to off duty and move the truck under off duty driving. I don't need to move the truck while logged into sleeper berth and be legal. And it won't interupt the 10 break. Driving off duty is allowed in the regs under certain conditions whether one is out of their 11 or 14 or even 70. That 10 hr can be any combination of sleeper and off duty. Some of us using the thing have figured it out. Those that have no experience with them just think they know.

that response you gave is the same one that made me realize that you managers have no idea the impact you make on a person
being a trucker means driving goods from point a to point b, safely and on time
i do that,, as do most drivers,
being a trucker does not mean we are the guinea pigs of corporations to tweak, control and monitor every action we do

The examples of what other drivers have stated on this thread is they park across the street from the reciever they are going to in the morning and go to sleep. They wake up in the morning even though the 10 hr break isn't completed and slowly drive over to said reciever and bump the dock. This practice is illegal. Even if you go to "off duty" driving. EOBRs are not fool proof so they shouldn't even be push upon us. If us paper guys do this we are called outlaws but if you E-log guys do it it is okay? E-logs do not force drivers into compliance. Like another driver stated somewhere on here, either your 100% legal or 100% illegal. Which is it? I will stick to my paper as this mandate will not get out of court for a long time.7-UP and AfterShock Thank this.

So you log on duty? If not your point is mute.
The thing people over look that don't use them is it makes the company plan loads better. With drivers on e-logs they can't keep asking until they find a driver willing to drive illegal to get a load there. ALL OF US HAS HAD THIS TALK!!!! So don't say you haven't!
My pay under E-logs and my rest are way more now than when I ran paper and I've been driving for 18 years.
And this we don't need new regs crap, e-logs are not new regs just a different way of recording the HOS. -
Feel free to do whatever you like in your personal vehicle, but when you're operating under someone else's authority, with their equipment, I'd say they have a right to monitor your behaviors. Not to mention an obligation to make sure you're following regulations.
I'd gladly work at an hourly rate and not get paid when I'm away from the desk, I'd stand to make more money. On the other hand life isn't all about money. Y'all chose to drive trucks, because you love it. So take the good with the bad, most jobs aren't perfect. Some are better than others. You're right, I don't have regulations to follow, and I COULD make a drivers life a living hell, but what purpose does that serve? High turnover does nothing for me, I just get a new driver that I know nearly nothing about and then get to find out what his/her behaviors are. For the most part I'm against termination, you need to establish a LONG (and I mean long) pattern of non compliance for me to be at the end of my rope. We'll exhaust every option to change your behaviors before we'll look to make a change.
