Smith Solomon is not tied to one particular school, but they have had recruiters come in from TMC, Covenant, and US Express. The instructors there will be honest about which companies to stay away from.

The school is 5 weeks, but is self-paced. If you aren't ready to take your road test with DOT, then you can wait and train more.

The school doesn't work pre-hires for you. I went online and applied to every school I could find, and the prehire letters started flowing in!

I'm starting with Star Transportation on 12 November.

I used my Post 911 GI Bill, and the only out of pocket expense was for my permit (125 bucks).

Good luck, and if you think of any more questions, lemme know. Ted.

If you'd ask me i'd simply say there all the same just a different colored bonnet. However there are some really professional companies out there that do genuionly care for there drivers if you do find 1 please let me and any of the other thousands of drivers who that company is.

For every month I receive the stipend, a month is deducted from the available 36 months. I don't plan on ever going to school again

By any chance, did you go to their school for your CDL? I was just wondering how much they charged. I checked Schneider's website and they do have a driver school here in town. I actually plan to check it out when I get a chance. How do you like driving for Schneider? How's their hometime?

Gorgious, FYI, Schneider does NOT have a driver school. They did in the past, but no more. You must attend a Schneider approved CDL training school and posess your CDL prior to training w/ Schneider. They will refund your tuition as long as it's an approved institution.

Roehl does have their own school which has a great reputation but is a bit fast paced. Being very wet behind the ears myself as far as the trucking industry goes, I'm a bit concerned about the term 'fast paced training'. :) After all, if I were to fail, it's a lot of money to owe and have no CDL.

If you go to CDL school of your choice, you can get 'pre-hire letters' from both companies. Actually, you should try to get as many 'pre-hires' as possible PRIOR to attending the school. Keep in mind that a 'pre-hire' is not a definite hire. You are not hired until you pass their training sessions.

Have you considered Conway Truckload? Also a very good choice and pet rider friendly. However, they do not refund tuition unless you go to Crowder college where they will pay part of the bill, not all of it, but there is NO contract. Starting pay from Conway is not bad, NOT BAD at all. Well, that's according to the recruiter and they are known to inflate the figures a bit just to get you in.

Millis Transfer is a good company w/ their own training school, but I'm not sure if they hire from the west coast.

As for your original question, Schneider or Roehl, I do believe it would be a coin toss. Both are good choices.

You should write a list of questions and call them directly.

So what your saying is that the .36 cents that they told me and also posted on their website is a bit inflated?

First if your coming from the military Schneider is the way go. They have the best going for military members. Also Schneider seems to pay more of the school tution then others

Georgeous Blue Mustang, This is a good topic and I think im going to add my 2 cents. Ive looked at quite a few different companies and have read alot. My friend started out with Scheider 7 years ago. He hated it for various reasons. I have decided to go with Roehl just today but have been leaning towards them for the last week and a half. You see I just went out for two days with my friend and i talked to drivers going down the road. Talked to Swift, Schneider, and Roehle. Had complaints from Schneider and Swift and none from the 7 Roehl drivers I talked to. Their schooling may be fast paced but if you pay attention and apply yourself whats the problem with that?? You said you were in the Army right? That can be fast paced. One of the Roehl drivers said he has been driving for 4 1/2 months. They wont let him into NY city or over the mountains out west yet. It seems they do care about safety. He seemed very happy about the miles they are giving him also. He said his miles are exceeding what Roehl posts as an average. Just my two cents......
