    1. In the city with at least 3 lanes going each way, I try to stay in the middle. Two lanes, I'm sticking with the left lane. Two many four wheelers edging out into the road and/or opening their car door into traffic. I usually do a pretty good job of staying caught up with everyone else, or at least running the speed limit. If I'm running the limit, you shouldn't need to pass me anyway, if you're obeying the law.
    2. Same thing. Three lanes, I'll take the middle, two lanes, the left. Unless, of course, it's forbidden by law.

It is the duty of the professional driver to drive in such a manner as to identy accident-producting situations quickly enough to take reasonable and prudent action to avoid an accident.

Here is an example of why NOT to stay in the right lane going through city traffic: travelling I80 east coming out of SLC, 4 lanes of travel and I am in the second from the right. two lanes (5th lane from previous on ramp) exit and traffic is backed up onto the highway in both lanes. Had I been in the far right lane I would have been stopped in that exiting traffic.

Often these exits during congested traffic can back up, even onto the traveling highway. If you are in the far right lane when there are more than 3 lanes of travel you are going to get caught up in exiting and entering merges that will increase the danger of collision. In this situation I consider the left two lanes the fast travel through lanes, the third lane my lane, and any lane to my right to be merging lanes to give those cars entering and exiting the highway their room to merge.

Not to mention the possibility of damage from crap hanging over that right lane in urban areas.
