Contact a local truck driver training school and see if you can get an instrutor who would like to make some extra money to bring a truck to the DMV office to help you. Also try and write up a Cragslist "gig" for a truck driver to meet you at the DMV so you can take the test.
I also recommend that you check with the Kentucky DMV to see if they require you to show proof of insurance for the truck you will take the road test in so you can make sure you have that in order no matter what truck you test in.Last edited: Oct 30, 2012

Have to have a CDL to rent one... they haven't rented trucks like that for a long time.

What are you plans? A little background on your situation would help. You would have to check, but there are areas where they have Third Party Testers (Private companies who have been licensed by the states to conduct CDL skills tests) who sometimes will charge an hourly rate to use their tractors and trailers to take the CDL test in. I'm sure though if you are planning on getting hired by the vast majority of carriers, you've read where a CDL with no certifiable training is not much use these days.

I am doing the same in Ma. and you can use a driving schools truck (rent it) for the test..

A cdl driver rents the truck and drives the newbie to the test site.

LOL... any idea what a truck and trailer rental with the deposits are? Trucking school would be a lot cheaper...

More on this later, but the problem with that scenario is that the driver who signs the lease/ rental is the only one who can drive it and be covered for insurance purposes. We lease tractors and we WAIVE all of the insurance costs as we have our own insurance. The costs for a one day rental, with trailer, insurance. fuel and mileages would be insanely expensive. I have asked my leasing agent if they can provide some ball park figures on this. I will share it if I can get the generic costs.bender Thanks this.

I just got out of the military and decided to try trucking. Ive been around it my whole life. And your right about the carriers hiring without experience, ive been looking at tmc and maverick. Maverick recruiter said they dont care how you get your cdl but tmc required school and if i go with them i can draw on the gi bill for the first 18 months. A local company offered me a job if i can get my cdl quick enough. Thats my reason for trying to get it on my own quicker.
