Hey im looking to become an o/o. I had an interview with the company I want to lease to today and he is running my app through insurance. Looking at a private paryt truck tommorrow. If I bought the truck how do I register it. My potential company offers "free plates" so do I have to wait for them or is that just tags for the plates i register on my own. Any help would be appreciated.

I just go to the BMV and get it titled. Then pay my 2290 and go to said company and they will need copy of title front and back and stamped copy of paid 2290.

    SHC Thanks this.

Make sure you provide your dot number so they don't try and get you to pay sales tax.

The base plate really don't cost that much in the big picture.
companys like for you to run there plate, and bob tail insurance because it can be a little more stream line for them.
But if you want to change companys how are you going to legally move the truck after you cut the cord if they take there insurance and license off your truck?
If you don't get enough miles and money gets short Will you have a the cash to buy one later?
    Just something to think about.

Is the DOT number good for truck parts and repairs also? I know you can use the MC # in PA for parts.

Not all states exempt class 8 equipment from sales tax. You will need to check your state to be sure. For those states that do offer an exemption, there is a form that must be filled out in order to avoid the sales tax. Most states also don't offer sales exemptions for parts or repairs. Keep in mind that you pay sales tax in the state you have your title, providing your state does not have an exemption.

If you buy a truck from an individual or dealer and want to lease it to a carrier, the process is the same. You will need a copy of the title or title application along with a copy of the stamped 2290. The 2290 is prorated from the time you purchase it and put it in service. All states require proof that the 2290 tax has been paid before they will issue a base plate. I would not pay the 2290 until I was ready to put the truck on the road. The tax is due in July. You may be able to avoid paying the tax if the previous owner has paid it and not filed for a refund on the unused portion of the tax. You will need to get a copy from the current owner. The tax is $550/year and is prorated at about $43/month.

first step go online to irs.gov and file for your ein number, you need this as this is your company tax number and everything you do will need this number. parts taxes jobs....second ifta you can print this out online fill it out and mail in. buy you truck title and i would plate myself if you can afford to. this way if the job sucks you can move on with out waiting. than you have 60 days to file your 2290 sign the truck pack your bags and get to work.

hey heads up. learn to work on your own truck, do your own tires, do as much as you can to save here and there and be ready for the major breakdowns ie motor. good plan would be set aside about 10 grand. no being a smart ### but owner op is a different world than company driver...best of luck

it is always better to get your own plate than run a company plate.
