I am sure most have read or heard about the danger of staying seated for long periods but just assume it will not happen to them. I am as guilty as the next guy.

I spent the past week in the ICU after having pains trying to breathe, anything deeper then a half breathe and I woul experience back pain. I finished the day and went home and after dinner and debate as to what to do took the trip to the ER to check into it. They ran several tests and came back to tell me I would be joining them for a few days as I had clots in my lungs (pulmonary embolsim). They really could not pinpoint exact cause but given that driving is what I do they believe that is the cause (similar to DVT).

I will spend the next 6 months on blood thinners and having blood work done to monitor the changes to the blood. It really is a small change and have to consider myself lucky as to what the outcome could have been. Adding a break every couple hours to just walk around the truck and being a little more observant of how long you stay sitting is a helpful tool in keeping yourself healthy.

    How ?

This has to do with a health problem take stopping every couple hours and walking around the truck might have prevented.......

Another thing to do is flex your calif muscles every 30 minutes as you drive. Do about 30 reps.

I am glad that you are okay...and embolisms can be cause from standing extended periods of time without breaks or sitting for long extended times with out breaks. You do need to take breaks and stretch the muscles.

Do they have you on Heparin or Accumadin?
