You don't usually flat - out fail the physical for elevated blood pressure. Your medical card is issued for A time period less than the customary 2 years . This gives you time to enter into treatment and to get it down to where you may extend the medical card period of validity. I am 63 and have had incidences of " white coat fever " since I took an FAA physical at age 21, 1970. It helps me if they will permit me to lay down in A darkened room for about 10 minutes. Needless to say I don't look forward to the physicals, just because of the blood pressure thing. At home I can be 110/65............I have gone to A med center in the evening, after A day of driving and coffee, I was pissed-off at traffic and late.My first reading was 200/100 ! After lying down I was 138/88 . I think at that time the limits were 160/90. I know they have been modified based upon world health standards or something. We are probably causing global warming with our hypertension, after Bush started the whole thing ! LOL !

over 140/90 you usually get 3 month card....I think you need to get off the weight watchers and just eat regular food, smaller portions. cut out the salt, bread, sodas, yada yada. walk more, do jumping jacks, etc. try to get your weight and BP down before going to Dallas. I may be wrong, but I'm assuming it will just be a waste of time.

They will turn you right around and send you home if you're over 140/90.
Every new orientation class seems to have at least one.
If your neck measures more than 18 inches they will also send you home for a sleep apnea study too.
Don't waste your time going there until all this is worked out in advance.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've been working a lot of double shifts and 12 hour shifts here at work. My blood pressure a couple years ago was at 145/88. So it could be high do to work related stress. I guess I'll have to give them a call Monday and talk to them. I really don't want to stay at my current job any longer than I have to but I don't want to go all the way down there just to be sent home with my tail between my legs.

    It's your weight and diet.
High blood pressure gets worse as you get older.
Work related stress can be a factor, but certianly no where near that much.
You should be under a doctors care and on medication with BP that high.
You're a heart attack and/or stroke waiting to happen.
After cancelling orientation with Stevens, call a doctor and get this taken care of.

You *could* follow the advice here

I haven't tried it for a physical yet, but I have tried it for before checking bp at home, and it works pretty good

You need to see a doctor asap. even if it is stress related. I know look at my profile and you'll see I did a lot of years on the road and then one day Boom ! I'm unemployed and unable to drive anymore EVER ! yes there are doctors that will pass you yes Stevens will give you heck and yes you probably be sent home, but more important is that you be around a looong time and at that pressure you wont. its that simple.

i am currently letting my bp regulate before signing on OTR.

i passed my medical in august at 150/90, but issued a one year card under regs. it is very important to note that passing with your private dr is way different than getting passed by the company dr.

my pre-hires are good to go, and all will take me into orientation; however, all will send me packing due to being over 140/90.

what i am doing is medication, diet & exercise. all the medication is doing is speeding it up. i am old enough to MAYBE have family history starting to show, but also wise enough to know i have to do to the basics: i am out of shape and have not ate right.

i would love to call mine stress or caffeine, but no, simple numbers dont lie.

do your BMI and max heart rate. also, share your concerns with the recruiters. if they still say come on over, question their ability, honesty & intent.

from what ive read, anything above a BMI of 36 will flag you.

dont be discouraged though. with your bp numbers, it sounds like you have a strong heart.

I read the article you referenced. One item, being drinking 20 oz. of beet juice about 2.5 hours before the physical. I think also taking niacin does the same thing. In Walmart vitamin section can get niacin; maybe try the 1500 mg daily and see if that helps. Sometimes neck & face will flush and tingle, but it's not harmful. Maybe do both; beet juice and niacin.
