I would say to test the waters, make some calls and put in some applications ... I think you will be surprised and how many companies would really like to have a driver from your age group ... in this industry age really wont matter and your life experience is a plus for you.

Bumming around the Orient...I'm envious. Thanks for taking the time to respond. So far all the feedback appears to be positive so I am really grateful to all the experienced truckers who take time to answer our questions. Ive learned more through this forum then talking to ten recuriters.

When I was with Schneider there was a new driver right out of school that was in his 70's so I know companies out there do hire older drivers. Just do well in school and pass the DOT as well as any company requirements.

My old man's still truckin at 65 and I bet he will be for a long time to come. Last summer a guy was truckin on a job we were on who was 88, 89, or 90 I can't remember exact but it was somewhere in there.

Seawolfe, I have been seeing a lot of driving jobs, especially on Craigslist, here in Florida looking for older drivers. Some jobs are part time, some are seasonal and some are full time. Some companies prefer older drivers because of patience and stability. Don't ever let your age discourage you. You aren't in the grave yet! Just leave yourself time for at least one garden!

Thanks chompi for the craiglist suggestion. I have never been discourged it just that ui am going to going back to school to get my CDL and I wanted to test the waters so to speak, What I an finding is that the trucking indusrty is wide open as far as age goes as long as you can do the job and are qualified.

    chompi Thanks this.

How old are you now? You have to be 21 or over to run out of state but only 18 to run instate. (could be 16 but I think its 18)

Another option would be to get your TWIC card since you live close to the port.

I don't know why the smiley face showed up. I keep editing it and it keeps putting that face there instead.. Suppose to read 18
