I recently heard from a TMC recruiter that they wont be using the 13 speeds as of 2013 their new trucks will be 10 speed, so Im sadly assuming that means they will be going with the bubbly 587's... and leaving the sexy mean lookin classic 389's that Im daydreaming to drive for a while..... any confirmations here ? Also I feel the bubbly trucks resemble 90% of the other bubbly trucks on the road so they will lose a looooot of character and distinction there. Comments ?

Fisher guy, I'm a driver apprentice with TMC right now. I have gone through my 2 weeks of orientation and just completed my 5 weeks with a driver trainer. In fact I'm in Des Moines right now on a Sunday night getting ready to test out tomorrow and get into my own truck. As for ur question about the new trucks, TMC is getting 100 new PB 388's starting now and should receive them all my December. I was out in the yard by the service and appearance shop and seen about 15 brand new 388's and yes they are 10 speeds. The 388's are a better looking updated model similar to the 379's (majority of the fleet). The new 388's also have a new touch screen Qualcomm system and DEF tanks. Hope that helps and I hope I can get into one of those new trucks!

actually the majority of tmc trucks are 378's and 388's they only have a few 379's and 389's the 378 are the shorter more slant nose just as with the 388 but i will stick my 06 379 no quallcom and no def aka no babysitter and no headaches every week

If you drive for TMC, you will drive what they give you.
No worries though, it'll be a nice truck. -

Quick note on the new trucks: the new 388s and soon-to-come 579s all have/will be 9-speed. Curriculum and Training will tell you it's due to lesser emissions. Not the ideal transmission to be slogging through mountains with, but after a while, you get used to it. Just don't expect to go nowhere all that fast...hehe.

A fleet switching from 13's to 9's makes more sense than to 10's....same shift pattern, so drivers are less likely to try to force it into 7th gear when they are trying for 6th while adjusting to the new transmission. Only real difference is a lack of the ability to split the high range gears, which isn't even all that necessary if the engine has a wide power band. You'll still get places just as quick....same top gear....same speed limiter setting.

The older trucks that we run, 07 and older are all 379 petes some have a 119 wheel base and some are longer which is the longhood with the 70" sleeper. The short hood 379 has a 63 inch sleeper. All of the new 2013 trucks have a 9 speed in a 450 ISX Cummins. They also have a 70" sleeper and a bunk heater.
