A local o/o offered to let me use his older pete and trailer he parked. Only stipulation is ill have to put the insurance on it to use it. Anybody got any idea's on who to check with? On the insurance I guess you could try praying, I doubt if you'll find anybody to insure you one day with a permit.

Your best bet may be to contact your local workforce investment office, they may have funds available to put you through a CDL school. try this link http://www.oet.ky.gov/des/wis/wfservices.htm

Finding an insurance company to cover you without having a CDL may be a challenge. I would check with Progressive Insurance and OOIDA. I don't know if OOIDA can write the insurance, but they may be able to direct you to a company that could write the policy. You may also check with your auto insurance company. They may be able to write something to cover you for one day. There may be one other possibility. Check with the owner of the truck and see if he can cover you under his policy.

The guy thats gonna go with me can put the insurance under him. Im just wondering if it could be insured as a sort of private use. I dont need 500k of load coverage for an empty trailer to test in.

You are only required to have $750,000 in liability to have your own authority. You don't need cargo insurance to be legal. It is shippers and brokers who require cargo insurance. You should be able to get short term insurance as long as it is in somone's name who already has their CDL.

I have a friend who bought a truck and didn't do anything with it for a couple of years. He was able to get some sort of insurance on it so that he could drive it on weekends to keep it up. I don't recall the company. At the time he didn't have a trailer.

If you can find it, you would only need liability and or physical damage coverage ( also known as comp/collision in the 4 wheeler world ). Cargo is a completely different policy and you just wouldnt purchase that section.

I would suggest going to a CDL training school. Most of them are approved under the Post 9/11 GI Bill now. It will also help you with getting a job.

    dannythetrucker Thanks this.
