PSU, have you double checked ATBS's numbers? Oh, and just wait til tax season. Suggestion, track your expenses yourself or on ProfitGauges and hire an accountant. LadyK can back me up on their incompetence. Especially if you finished your MBA (since I only got half way through it) I would think you could do there job for a lot less. Do you really need the comparison to industry averages?

    Lady K Thanks this.

Thanks for stroking my ego :) I was not offended by anything you said to me, I was refering more to the reactions of some of the other drivers. As we can see there was a misscomunication. As we are in a Central site I was ASSUMING we were talking about Central drivers and not trucking in general. As we can see the saying is true about what can happen when one assumes.

To the new guys - you can feel free to respectfully disagree with anything anyone says, but the key word is respect. I have a lot of respect for the guys who have been at this a long time, and while I may not always agree with what they say, I would never tell them that they were wrong when they gave an opinion. Out here on the road experience matters, and if you want to pick it up faster keep your ears open. A question was asked and snowyy gave his opinion; plain and simple. Whether or not it was intended as such the response to him was very patronizing. it's offensive to me when someone without experience patronizes those who have it. Maybe I overreacted, but the response to snowyy's post was an overreaction as well.

This is the last I will post about this.

Yah I have been noticing a few of the issues you and lady k have brought up in the past. I am planning on finishing up the year and letting them do my taxes as I have already paid for more than half of it. I will then have my accountant compare it next year and then, if needed, file a revision.
I do enjoy the comparisons, but am finding that, while at Central at least, there are few costs I am not beating the average. There have been a few times they have been able to help me with regulations and tax code issues that i did not know about, so I would say they are a good investment for the first year or two, but after that maybe not so much.

I have been leasing for about 4 months and have atbs doing my books. I keep my own books in a couple spreadsheets (not very detailed, but accurate) and I've already noticed some big discrepancies. If nothing else, they have a lot of miles missing (like thousands each month). I, too, am thinking about getting a new accountant after the first of the year. I'm not super concerned how I compare to the average, much more concerned with what ends up in my pocket. The things they tell me I already know (miles were a little low in sept, fuel expense is well below average, I know this stuff).

I don't know how familiar my old accountant is with the transportation industry, so what's the best way to find a new one?

Granted I have a Bachelors in Accounting and was only 3 classes shy of my MBA and could sit for the CPA, but honestly it isn't too hard. ATBS's course and initial guidance is good for newbies or people who have no clue how to run a business. Of course I have told Kevin Rutherford that a lot of the time he is talking to people with half my intelligence and less than that in common sense. (And really I don't think too highly of myself.) We fired ATBS after several arguments where I knew tax law better than they did, and being told if we wanted the taxes done we would have to pay extra and they had it wrong. They said we owed several thousand and we only owed $97. Hmmmmm, don't think they need any more of my money.

    Lady K Thanks this.

They spoke w/Klingon and were reviewing numbers... They kept asking "does that sound right?", we were like, you're the 'experts' you tell US if the numbers are right!! I use QuickBooks, but there is a simplified version call Quicken that would work as well. I have also heard good things about Profit Gauges, but haven't tried it myself. Then for filing taxes we use Turbo Tax, but we have had our own businesses for many years, so we had some previous experience with the twists and requirements for business taxes. Needless to say, after that phone conversation we fired ATBS!!

Funny how this thread moves with the seasons. I agree with the people stating that the negative comments are unnecessary but I also agree that real truckers have the right to say whatever they feel like in this forum as long as they're not attacking specific people. At the same time, I believe stating the main purpose of this forum is better left to the originator and/or moderators of the site. As I understand it, TTR was developed for communication by truckers, new old, or not yet started and the families of these truckers as well as the general public with a general interest in trucking. But maybe I'm off. Who knows? Probably one of the moderators. That being said, you guys are making me nervous about ATBS! I'll give them six months to prove useful, then will start looking into other business professionals for support. I believe it would be best to select an accounting firm with a proven track record and verifiable experience in the industry. With the money we pay for their expertise we should be able to find a comparable service with a little effort on our parts. Anywho, back to the Fam. I'm about to be on the road through the holidays and New Years can't get here fast enough! Be safe y'all.

It's funny how people neglect to see Central in there truest form.

Four years ago around this time Central decided to take money from there drivers.
    Starting pay - .02 a mile
    Missed H/T. - $40.00 a day
On time bonus $20.00 a stop
    L/O starting pay - .02 a mile
    Safety bonus no more
    Run tru Xmas $250.00 gone
dead head surcharge for Coors dedicated gone
Company fuel bonus gone how you gonna feel if it happens to you I'm talking 1,800 trucks.

An example if they take a penny a mike away
3,000 miles per week = $30.00 you lost
    times 100 trucks= $3,000.00 they saved a week
    times 52 weeks = $156,000.00 they saved a year.

Central is the one who's in business there the ones in control, your truck is OWNED AND OPERATED by them and that will never change you don't have a business going you just get what's left after Central takes there share.
There have been so many drivers before you that have lived tru the BS Central had to offer good drivers good people. Beware of the lease program it takes more then you know to survive. Central also has ways to increase your performance bond by a $1,000.00. Lets say you need new drive tires $2,500.00 for 4 you don't have it in your maintenance account Central will loan you the money and at the same time increase your bond $1,000.00 at $50.00 a week. Remember if anything happens and you can't finish your lease Central will keep everything in your accounts.
Good luck many will fail at the hands of Central.
