Been driving with them since 2003, no actually 2001 but thats another bad story i could tell at another time. I'll be glad to help you with any questions that i can answer, with the time and experiences i've had with them through the years. In my opinion theres no better out there. Good luck with your search and drive with safety in mind.

Why have you stayed with them for so long? A student at Conway Freight makes more per mile than a two million miler at Truckload and is home daily with weekends off.
-
Maybe he Works in the Front Office. Im Kidding of course.

More per mile only means more money if you get the miles. Students start out at Freight spinning around in circles in a fork truck on the loading dock. They may work a full shift if there is work available. Then they graduate to pick up and delivery (a UPS driver with a bigger truck), then after they have paid their dues, they get to move into line haul. They will pull double and triples where allowed on the night shift only, under tough time constraints, and when they are home every night, their "home at night" starts around 8 in the morning while the family is awake, they sleep.
IN over the road, you get much more quality time with the family...and more money. -
In what planet?
4 days home every 4 weeks vs every saturday and sunday off plus the fact that you sleep in your own bed and eat home cooked meals? Yeah, sounds like super quality time.
More money? 120,000 miles a year at .38 plus bonuses will put you at around $50k/year. I don't even work for an LTL carrier with such a good reputation as Conway Freight and I'm already bringing home more than I was when I worked at TL. Worked 50 hours and grossed $1140. Even though I'm at the bottom of the totem pole in terms of pay here. The work is much more steady, guy that trained me last week grossed $65k last year. It's easier to make money when you don't depend on what a load planner found for you, or depending on the area you ended up in. It's not my fault they gave me a load to Florida to deliver on friday and now I have to sit because nobody ships until monday. Oh, and baby sit the truck and trailer FOR FREE while I'm at it. Because god forbid, they payed for time wasted. Compare that to having a 200 mile run back and forth plus dock work.
Also, there is day linehaul. All types of schedules depending on the company and the terminal. -
Nice...can't argue, its just not for everyone. I won't work on a dock at 57 years old( i can, just don't want to), won't pull doubles (i can, i just don't want to), will work as few nights as possible and suits me better. I take 4 to 8 days home, 24/7 with my family they are awake when I am, sleeping when I am, it just suits me better.
I get my loads delivered early so that if there is time on a load, I stand a good chance of getting it relayed off and catching another. Planners help me, more often than they hurt. If it looks like I am stuck for a 34, usually someone breaks down (or hits something) and I get the call to grab their load.
I make as much as the guy that trained you and I only have a student about half the time because that is how I like it. Again, it depends on what makes you happy. I prefer my lifestyle to line haul and dock work.
Newbies all hear that local is the only way to go. They don't hear about the time on the dock, the p/d, the waiting to get a line haul route...Just sharing a true picture.
You all be safe out there. -
i hear a lot bad about con-way freight its why they got some many tickets and accidents. They are under so much time pressure its not even funny. you think its bad when they give us (OTR) the Freight loads its worse with freight. Yes you can be home every night but road is right on how it works. if they dont have freight (Slow week) u dont work that much and can screw your self over.. When it comes to taxes you dont get per dm for local like you do for OTR. so you get an extra $59 aday being OTR. con-way truckload is a good company. but with every good company they got there bad sides us drivers dont like. but we are a lot better then most other companys. Oi! you got a good job there then. but got to watch with all these laws going in they could go right down the hill. with how many small companys are being shut down for Violations. Most small companys running illegal and crapy trucks/trailers. Fake log books......
