One should not mix up the CO2 which trucks cars and cows emit in big quantity and is not affected by emission systems, with CO, HC, NOx and PM which is reduced by emission system and creates smog which is dangerous for humans.

They shouldnt but they do. Thanks to the " Green Community" basing everything on a CO2 number that is based off algorithms to convert everything to a CO2 "value" then they call it your carbon footprint and associate greenhouse gases with it which all leads to the general population believing CO2 is the general emission which is the furthest from true. The CO2 and CO emissions are determined by the fuel itself and no emissions system remove them.

True, but only in areas where weather and geologic patterns cause this to occur regularly like the LA basin and Denver. For the rest of us, it is usually a non issue. This is why the majority of the country still does no regular vehicle emissions testing. No need. But it seems that those who live in the areas that have smog issues, are the ones that are deciding for the rest of us how things are to be done. I understand and can deal with anti-idling laws in areas where smog is an issue. Even some emissions equipment, if it had been done right to begin with instead of this knee jerk reactionary implementation. EGR should never have been done on diesels. SCR I have no problem with. And without EGR, with the advancements is engine timing and fuel injection, DPF may not have been necessary. Leaving only SCR to control NOx, which is the primary source of low level ozone pollution. None of this nonsense reduces CO or HC. If you burn fuel, you are going to get CO and HC. Heck, they have even found HC (called PAH's, or Polycyclic Aeromatic Hydrocarbons) embedded in rocks on Mars. It is commonly occurring and no big deal. Just a fact of life with carbon based life forms and the universe we live in.
Believe it or not, most CO is produced naturally in the upper atmosphere due to photochemical reactions in the troposhpere, next largest producer is volcanos. Neither of which has anything to do whether we were here or not. And, we use CO in various applications to benefit us. Keeping meat fresh in packaging is one.
And those of us old enough, and not senile yet, still remember clearly the 60's and 70's environmental conditions. We are no where near those days of pollution when things like the Cuyahoga river in Ohio catching on fire. You used to be able to see the exhaust from every vehicle rising. It was a mess. Sure some of the emission standards, especially on cars helped, but technological advances in engine design, computer controlled engines, and other stuff did more to clean up engines and make them more efficient. And these had nothing to do with government.

C16KIWI and power freak Thank this. -
Ill agree entirely there. EGR creates more problems than it fixes. Without EGR DPFs stay clean. The entire goal of an EGR based "in-cylinder" NOX reduction system is to keep combustion temps low. They ###### the timing, lower the compression ratios and thus reduce cylinder temps which results in lower NOX emissions but extremely high PM. Not to mention the fuel efficiency loss and accellerated engine wear.
Off road engine makers are able to meet Tier 4 Final with SCR only however their PM standards are slightly higher.
I have no problems putting DEF in when it means no EGR and no DPF. -
I followed the EGR debate in it's early days.(around 02 or 04)
The hardest advocates for EGR were "captains" off the trucking industry.
I remember reading the articles in which those in the USA said they didn't want DEF like in Europe and they prefered EGR as diesel was much cheaper then in the USA.
You can blame goverment for a lot off stuff but the gov'm never said that EGR must be used.
Only said emissions had to come down. -
I can't afford to keep repairing and cleaning a broken exhaust cleaning solution like that found in the C15 acert Cat. $8000.00 in one year to multiple fixes to the regeneration and Dpf system. I can't do another year of those kinda of expenses.
Dpf, Cgi, Egr, exhaust recycling.. It simply doesn't work. Wasn't designed for prolonged use over a truck's engine life of 1,000,000 miles. Engines burn oil over time, oil clogs the Dpf, exhaust burner can't burn hot enough to clean out Dpf. Regens run more frequently, longer, more fuel is used, parts wear out with excessive use.
Active after treatment systems aren't the solution to our clean air problem.
Attack the problem at the source. Makes engines run with less and burn more efficiently.morehp Thanks this. -
EGR and blowby gasses combine to form a wonderful sludge... Spent a lot of time cleaning out 6.0L Powerstroke intakes and VW TDI intakes.

You dont think they are trying? These systems will only improve in years to come until diesels can be engineered to run without them or are replaced by an alternative fuel source.
If they have the technology now, my guess is that it needs a lot of refining and is far too expensive to implement at this time.
Off road equipment has been able to meet their standards using only SCR with no DPF however their standards on PM are 10 times higher. NOX standard is the same though. -
I agree the engineers are doing their best, it is just the EPA got off of their leash & has no concern of the economic pain their regs cause anyone.
-
I really wish the EPA would have been more generous with the amount of time in between tiers. 3 years to design, prototype and test new systems is really tight for any OEM to accomplish. I think the manufacturers did the best they could in the time they were given. I also believe we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. I believe most if not all of the emissions will be taken care of after the engine within 5 to 10years. We will start to see a reduce dependence on EGR. Without it, engine reliability will come back to pre07 levels because they no longer have EGR valves, or coolers with all related sensors and accessories.
