You're probably already aware of what I'm about to write, so consider the forthcoming information to be aimed at those who aren't in
    the know, .............. yet.
    Here goes, -----
    :smt024 -----------

Big truck truck drivers with Big truck truck horsepower rarely encounter any hills. :biggrin_25512:
Big truck truck drivers with fewer ponies can :smt100 their Big truck get up the hill to fetch a pail-0-water by stickin' duct tape over the headlights so their Big truck can't see the incline ahead and therefor be unaware that they're climbing.
Imagine the smile on y'all's Big truck big truck grill when the duct tape is pulled off, allowing y'all's Big truck to take in the view from up thar.

This handy hint works better in the daylight though, and will render flashin' other Big trucks over when they've completed passin' impossible as no light is visible through the duct tape.
All the more reason to have a full stable of horses under the hood.
When Big trucks with little motors pass Big trucks with big motors in the flats, --- it's 'cause they let you pass.
When Big trucks with big motors pass Big trucks with little motors while climbin' a mountain, --- it's 'cause they
want to, --- and can git-er-dun with minimal effort.

    :nike:

Big horse power, and big torque --- it's a beautiful thang.
    Don't leave home without it.
Just don't forget to remember, -----
If y'all can't run with the Big dawgs, ---
    :sad1:
Stay on the back porch, .......
    'till y'all can. :smt112
    :laughing1:
    :hello2:

So run it in 1st gear for 3 miles till you power out because you have no momentum. It is a accepted practice. in off road driving. Course I could be talking out my neck with decades of logging/pipeling and HH.

It's the noise they don't want. With all the EPA stuff required these days, not many trucks still have loud jakes.

    ↑↑ What he said ↑↑

I've used the jake when slowing down entering small towns with the engine/exhaust/compression brake signs, right past cops who were sitting there with their radar guns. Never got pulled over. None of my company's trucks have the loud jakes on them.

Well, I suppose we disagree then. Sure if the hill is too steep you hold whatever gear that will keep you rolling, but if I'm winding it out, I'll grab another gear if I know I can do it without tearing things up. Shifting with the Jake in some instances could make a smoother shift than without. I pull a smooth bore tank so I don't shift at all if the shift is going to be rough.

you can leave them on while upshifting if you can float without letting off the throttle just slightly giving it pressure. if i come to traffic or a light, ill skip gears downshifting 9 to 7, 7 to 5, 5 to 3 etc... that way you keep rolling and stay smooth. i drive a tanker so smooth is key
