H.O. Wolding! I quit because I was too young and dumb to realize how good I had it. I will also say this, Wisconsin is the most beautiful state with the friendliest people. I totally enjoyed the time I spent there. I would move there in a heartbeat.

The hands down best company I ran for was MHF, Inc. outta Zelienople, PA (North of Pittsburgh on rt. 19). In '99 I had 3 months experience and had been outta the truck for about 9 months. they hired me on at $0.37/mile and gave me every mile I could run. Still got me home every Friday in time for dinner and loaded me out for the following Monday (although I generally left Sunday to get some miles knocked down).
Of course, this was back in my "outlaw" days. Company never once required nor asked that I violate the hours of service. Need to make this very clear. MHF ran a tight ship. That said, the few of us who were driven more by greed than any desire to abide by what we saw then as overly restrictive HOS regulations (which weren't anywhere near as restrictive as today's, by the way!) could always find that extra load or two.
Trucks were beautifully maintained, dispatch were very good at their jobs, one of the owners was also a load planner whose office was right by the dispatch floor with the door open. The one time a new dispatcher made the mistake of insulting a driver was the last few minutes that punk kid worked for the company. And considering the ###-chewing he got, I bet he lost a few pounds in the process.
MHF is still around, but they aren't as big as they were, and they weren't ever that big to begin with. Last I saw, they were running Freightliner Cascadias.
If your interested, check them out at http://www.mhf.com/. I'd go back if I were still interested in van work (or driving professionally for anyone.) -
TCSI/Transland Springfield Mo (family atmosphere)
American central transport Liberty Mo (ACT) (money) -
The "hands down best" company I ever drove for was Jim Palmer Trucking out in Missoula, MT. This was when Jim still had the company. Drove for them from 1996 thru 1999....left due to a divorce and child custody issues.
This was a company that did EXACTLY as they promised. They got you miles, got you home when you needed, ran pretty #### good equipment and NEVER jerked you around! And....at the time.....33cpm was pretty decent money. I never had a direct deposit every Saturday that was less than $950 after taxes.
I hated to see the various blogs on the company since Jim went bankrupt and sold the company. -
If you don't want to slip-seat, or be 'ordered' to chain no matter how bad the conditions are, stay away from Gordon
Im with Celadon, and while they're not the best, they're not the worst either. Trucks are permanently assigned 2010 or newer ProStar + (big sleeper) and I take mine home. See my thread here about them -
The company Iam leased to right now. Fremont Contract Carriers in Fremont Nebraska. They treat everyone like friends, even if you make a mistake nobody talks down to you they just want to help fix it. Great customer base. I run dedicated from Wis. to Pa and get home every weekend and make great money. All of the O/O and Company drivers that Ivw run into have told me I made a good choice in leasing there. Its rare to hear that, and they were right.

I worked for TMC Transportation for nearly 17 years. And up until around 2000 I loved working there. They kept me busy, got me home regularly, and I really liked the T600's they used to have. Then, IMHO, they started changing, and I wasnt so tickled anymore. But at one time Id have said they where the best anywhere. And I do still miss them from time to time. There where things even now they really had worked out pretty well. As the old saying goes..."you dont know what you got till its gone".
SierraSemiDriver Thanks this. -
I felt the same way my first 2 1/2 years at Gordon. Then they started bringing in operations people from big companies like Swift and JBHunt and things went down from there; the family-feel disappeared
