    Hi folks,

It looks like I will be starting on a new journey in life as an O.T.R. driver for GTI.
I thought that driving a truck would be like riding a bicycle. (who knew that riding a bike could be so hard?)
Even though I have 30+ years of driving all types of commercial trucks, IE: flatbeds, vans, tankers and mobile cranes, I had a desk job for the last ten years so I had to go to truck driving school to take a refresher course.
It's a good thing that I did because I was used to driving junk from the 70's and 80's. I had to get used to how well the steering and brakes worked on decent equipment and how to shift at a lower speed and r.p.m. range and double clutching instead of floating the gears. It was almost like learning to drive all over again, but I did get the hang of it pretty quickly though.
All of my driving experience has been with local construction companies delivering equipment and materials to the jobsites and back, so I have absolutely no experience hauling O.T.R. so I know that this will definately be an eye opening experience for me. I hope this old dog can still learn some new things, because I know there will be a lot of them.
With all the research I did on different companies that hire out of CDL schools, I think I have been fortunate that Gordon Trucking has accepted my application. I am just waiting for them to get me lined up with a trainer, and then hit the road.
I will try to keep you updated if anyone is interested.

    Drive safe everyone...........:biggrin_25519:

    Hello again,

I will be going to orientation at the Pacific terminal on 9/24. I also talked with the trainer, and he seems to be a really nice guy. We should get along just fine.
I know that I will be learning a lot since they are sending me out on the T.C. division. (I don't have a clue when it comes to hauling refrigerated loads)
    Can't wait to get started!!!
    Take care,
    Willy:biggrin_25519:

Hey Willy. I drove TC fleet for a few years when I started with GTI. I've been gone for awhile now, got into Law Enforcement. They took care of me back then. I'm considering a return to driving, and if I do, I will return to Gordon because of that good history with them. Jim Pitman was one of my favorite managers. He related to the drivers, and was just a nice guy.

I think you will enjoy it there, I know I did. Just remember to be a great time manager, and do not expect the world. Be real out there.

I carried a small propane BBQ on board and cooked all my own food. Rarely ever ate at truck stops or fast food. Saved a lot of $$ that way.

Good luck and May God Bless you and keep ya safe.

    knuckledragger and Willy_J Thank this.

I am extremely interested in your experience as a newbie with GTI. Haven't talked to their recuiter yet, but they look good by comparison to other new-driver companies. I live in Portland, so proximity and western states seems to work for me. Keep bloggin'!

I run the NW more than I care to think about..:biggrin_2556: but I speak with GTI driver's frequently and they seem to all be a class act. As far as learning new things- I still do everyday- If only I could remember what I've learned.:biggrin_2559: At this rate it's doubtful I will ever be a 'Know It All.' Good Luck.!!

Hope you don't mind slip-seating and 'forced' chaining
