It only takes a half a second to flip it on. I would keep it off when shifting up and only turn it on when you need it. I cant tell you how many morons i have seen going up hill and let off the throttle when passing me to let the jake pop. Then they slow down and i pull on them. Pure stupidity.

If you know what you are doing, you never need to shut your jake off. Mine seldom gets flipped off. You can shift...loaded or unloaded....up or down....with the jake on all the time. Just don't let the throttle all the way out. Pretty elementary.

Why? Just because so many are scared or aren't able to operate their truck with a jake brake on...which is there for a reason....doesn't mean you can't learn how to do it properly. Drive YOUR truck...don't set in the seat and hold the steering wheel.

That one sentence you wrote saying, "am trying to build good habits from the beginning",...... I believe you have good common sense. The Veteran driver's or as we are called "PROFESSIONAL'S, have gave you the answer you was looking for. Goodluck.
