Dispatchers charge different fees. When I was dispatching I charged 10% of what the load paid. Some charge as little as 5%. Others charge a flat fee for each load or a flat weekly fee for everything. It is a lot of work finding good paying loads. You can expect to spend many hours on the computer and phone to get the best rates. I was usually able get better rates for those whom I dispatched than they were getting for themselves. You will need to have strong negotiating skills. There is much more to being a successful dispatcher than having a phone, fax and computer. Those who have never done it have no idea how time consuming it can be, especially when you have an owner who only wants to run in certain freight areas and those may not be good areas.

 

I have used a couple of different companies. Most of them are just girlfriends of the truckers who sit behind the computer all day. The last dispatcher i used charged 5% of every load. But i felt like that was just a ripoff. Now I'm using link removed. They only charge $75 for every load. I have 3 hotshot trucks and they keep them loaded pretty good. Good Luck.

 

Only $75 that's 10%+ on loads @ or less than $750 gross... You should have stayed with the 5% deal or better still,learn how to dispatch yourself,it ain't that difficult. And really you ought to quit pretending to be a trucker and stop advertising your business here...

omg 12% thats beyond rip off thats criminal 1.5 to 1.8 per mile is also terrible rate i dispatch my self i dont factor and i dont take quick pay i get 2 a mile average and thats doing it all myself

 

You pull for me I won't charge you a #### thing because I'm going to take our percentage off the top of the load anyway. Why charge more to dispatch you on my loads?

 

Cause some people claim there is no way a driver can self dispatch themselves and find loads while driving. I do it all the time it's called a hands free cell phone. You can't look at the internet while driving but you certainly can when at home or parked. You build up a base of solid contacts with good freight in the areas you run then you have mnumbers in your phone you can call while driving "hey, if you have any of those such and such loads I'm in the area give me a call" or even send out emails on downtime posting agents of your whereabouts.. I do this every day. You can't wait for the loads to post nor expect them to call you every day. You have to be proactive. Cannot imagine paying anyone to do this job for me. Cannot imagine them being as hungry as I am to get the best rate possible either, or to have the passion I do for it to care enough about it... Just another load for them. It's my life.. It's not that difficult to self dispatch one just has to figure out a system.. At times it means your 10 hour break might turn into 8 or 7 or 6 hours of actual sleep if you are checking the boards and running numbers on several possible loads the night before, this being when your usual contacts can't help and you have to put it together off loadboard land... Really it's part of the fun for me of owning a truck. The best part, it's like a drug really, is making the deal to cover a load for whatever rate... That feeling you get when you know what you will do a load for... and it's in the ballpark and you just know they are going to give your rate, you talk it up really fast and put the pressure on... come on man I'll book it right now!! I'm on it!! at such and such rate I know you can... sometimes you lose out and dont book it.. Sometimes you really beat up on some broker who offers a ridiculous low rate and you end up getting, what they think of as, a rediculous high rate... ....really enjoy those as they are the rare ones... That is the fun of loadboard land.. I think why many prefer a dispatch service is because when they first get started they tire of the endless phone calls trying to secure a load that come to nothing.. It took me three months and proabaly hundreds if not over a thousand calls before I ever booked my first load off a board at what I thought a fair rate... I could have booked cheap freight much sooner... These things take time and patience... But really there is nothing better than the art of making a deal to haul a load that's the best part to me...
