IS it Woth it, thats the question. As i am not yet into trucking, but will be soon, i have already decided to be an O/O. Just for the fact that i can say No when i want to and go home when i want to without any permission. Just the fact that i can chose what load, where to go, and be out as long as i want is a plus. Yes, the industry is changing but you have to want to it and change with it. Its an up and down industry and you have to save during the good so when it gets bad your not strugling to much. My wife is excited about it and we are going to make a family business out of it with 2 trucks to start with, me and her brother as drivers. In short YES it is worth it if you want to work at to make it work.

Not to beat you up on your post here, but once you been in trucking for atleast a year then tell us what you really think. Alot of people have/had your same mindset came into trucking and left because it wasnt for them. OTR is VERY lonely, frustrating. I hope you don't plan to go into trucking straight off being a O/O. If you really want to enter the industry the right way goto work for a company, keep track of everything miles, fuel, repairs. Then after that year if you still want to get your own truck you will be much more informed as to what its gonna cost to run it. The little man just can't compete much with these massive companies so you got old school O/O sitting around refusing to make spare change running a load, but these big companies hurt the little guy so eventually half of them lease onto a company regardless. I don't know if you plan to buy/lease your trucks , but if I was gonna be leased onto a company Id rather be leased on with their equipment as long as it was a walk away lease. Im not saying you cant make it in the industry but don't base everything you know off of reading posts in here.

Your right, it is lonley and frustrating, but for the last 4 yrs i have been in Iraq more days than i have been at home, so that takes care of the lonley, having to leave my family for 6-8 mos at a time on a moments notice, well that takes care of the frustrating. Being shot at and watching your friends die in front of you, that takes perserverence of seeing everything and still doing the job with out question. It has been very hard for my family the last 4 yrs and they are ready for me to drive a truck. I will be going with Roehl under their Honor Program and their 2 yr apprenticship program. Thats my experience. As for my family, my brother in law has been driving for the last 4 years and has driven every thing from general freight to flatbed oversized. My father in law helped run his dads 12 truck operation before his dad died. We have the experience and will grow on that. So you can beat me up on my post. I never do anything with out proper thinking and alot of research before I make a move. But thank you for you post and your criticsm. It only makes me want to suceed more.

I wasnt trying to beat you up or criticize you, sorry if it came off as that. The Honor program with Roehl from what I heard is very good and free. I just wanted to say before jumping feet first you should be a company driver to see if it's the lifestyle you are willing to do for the rest of your life, thats all. Everyones perspective changes after they start driving. Most people think d\truck drivers have it made, make great money hold a steering wheel all day and thats it. What they dont realize is pay isnt that great, it's a 70 hour a week job being away from your family....I hope you the best of luck at Roehl and with starting your own company if that what you still chose to do.

$360 is is not great but for 2 1/2 shifts its ok just starting out

you can make it fro font ca to carlisle pa in 54 hours thats ok not great but teams move around the clock they do not sit arround at trucks stops and buffets. if you run that 2 or 3 times a week its good bread, but yeah for a super trucker that is money hungry its not great

Thats why leaseing make no sence. If you owned the truck yourself you take the profit up to $1065(with a truck payment estimate at 250 a week and insurence. at $100 dollars a week and still be able to do another load that week. from what she said the load payed her .80cpm before expences. and take away the coast of fuel .53cpm she is making .27cpm and thats before the lease maint and insurence... she should just go drive for schenider or swift, shed make moore money...
And am i missing somthing but when was a 2600 mile run for a team a good run?

you have to start somewhere, for someone just starting out and getting their first o/o gig it is not great, and the kinks get worked out eventually. the one thing about being o/o is you are not forced dispatch. no chains and a few dollars less to keep me off of cabbage is worth it.
