What amount of coverage are you guys carrying on your policies. Its not something that I've paid attention to until this week. Hubby stepped out on his step to move the monitor closer to the cab to punch in his numbers for his load, and he went down. He first thought he broke his arm.

We have a $1k med pay on our insurance, but this got me thinking, with him being a flat bedder, and the product that he hauls, it would be best to up that to something higher, in case he does fall off the trailer while strapping or whatever.

Just wondering what you all have bound on your coverage for extra security in these measures.

Are you referring to the med-pay that comes with your Auto Liability policy?

Yes, it covers the driver if he's hurt in or around the truck or trailer.

Doesn't that coverage come with really low limits? Usually intended to cover ER deductibles for collision-related injury? I would be thinking more towards occupational accident insurance, not something added to the vehicle liability policy.

    Clasix1055 and bullhaulerswife Thank this.

Yeah I don't believe I carry anything extra to protect myself if I am injured, I think like Red stated that would be an occupational accident, or like an AFLAC, or your personal medical insurance right?

Actually what my agent told me, was it covers the driver if he is injured in or around the truck. Like this incident, hubby slipped off his steps at the scale. So it would be covered. I didn't know about it covering stuff like that until I spoke with my agent this morning. I just was telling her about the story of his day, and she said "Hold on a minute, let me check something." Came back on the phone and said that he would have been covered for $1000 in this case.

I upped it to $5k today for an extra $18 dollars a year. Something to think about anyway.

That is what paying for Occupational Accident (OCC/ACC), sometimes called Workman's Comp, is all about.

You're still not getting what I'm saying. You are already covered by this small policy for minor injuries. So why file a claim against your wc policy and have the rates go up if you can take care of this with your commercial coverage. You are automatically afforded $1k and you can get another $4k for another $18/ yr.

I don't think occ/acc is the same as workman's comp. O/A has limits, WC does not. O/A is for folks that aren't required by law to have WC but want something in place at a lower cost.

BHW: I see what you're up to now, and it makes sense. Sorta. What's to say a med claim on your commercial veh liability won't make that go up too? That would make me more nervous than just paying cash for a minor injury.

Last I checked, the O/A coverage thru OOIDA was reasonable (a lot less than W/C), but would be higher than a medical add-on.

The way she explained it to me, it didn't sound like it would make any change in your premium, using this instead. She said that your loss runs and your credit would change the premium, but not the med coverage.
