If you drive for an OTR company that's not based in your home town then you will have a trailer with you on your home time. Its easier to dispatch you on a nearby load when you have an available empty. Most of the time you won't have a load onboard due to insurance and liability reasons. Find a place close by that you could keep the truck and trailer just in case you do find yourself with a load on your home time. Never leave a loaded trailer without your truck under it. I would suggest buying a good king pin lock and glad hand lock for your trailer. Even if its empty put the locks on. Folks will steal empty trailers. Try to find a well lit area with something to back your trailer up to. This will make it harder to take anything out of your trailer. Some truck stops will let you park for a few days as long as you clear it with the management. (Get a signed receipt or paper from that manager) inform dispatch about the parking agreement. Just remember to cover your own behind.

My husband had parked his trailer down the road from our daughter on a vacant lot when he was US X and luckily I had gone to town at the right time because on the way back here was this tow truck clear 3 hrs away from us hooked up to the trailer, hubby had the lock on kingpin. They said someone had called it in as stolen and missing for 2 yrs, yah we just delivered a load the day before in it. Someone was planning on getting a recovery fee for it. He parks the trailer and sometimes the tractor attached at our local truckstop. A lot of companies do not want you to be under a load when you have hometime off because who is going to babysit the load. They usually prefer to have you within a 50 mile radius of delivery to home for some companies. He can now swing this way if he is in the area since he is a L/O which is a lot easier sometimes than planning on hometime..
