We have 12.7 w/o head and I wanna get it from JY. but 14L only there. so Can I use 14L head on 12.7 and can I fit old 12.7 injectors in 14L cyl head?

No one has responded but I am 99% sure the 12.7 and 14 liter heads are the same unless it is a 14 liter with the newer style fuel injectors.

I can't use the paste function here for some reason, but dieselenginetrader.com/diesel_talk has a detroit section, and those guys really know their stuff.

I often wondered if the 12.7 and 14L heads were essentially the same animal like the old Chevy small block heads were interchangeable on some of them.

It may work depending on what you have and what your trying to do. There are three head castings that I know of,
1:ddec 3 & 4 non egr
2:ddec 4 egr
3:ddec 5 which is egr
I believe they will interchange on the block with no problem. the differences that I know of are:
1: ddec 3/4 non egr use old style injector and have the bigger log style intake
2: ddec 3/4 egr use old style injector and thin style intake
3: ddec 5 uses new style N3 injector and thin style intake
The distinction is which level of ddec and if it is egr or non egr. There are probably more part numbers for the heads but they will accuont for different valves or set ups. So, since you have a 12.7 its probably ddec 3/4 so you should be ok with either the 1st or 2nd head I mentioned. Just make sure you have the right intake.Smellfunny Thanks this. -
the problem is that they sell 14 L heads with new style injectors (two valves, may be used with DDEC-V only), so I wanna put old 12.7 injectors to 14 head, may be changeing some other parts from cracked cyl. head

Dont think that is going to work, ddec v injector cups screw in and have a flat sealing surface. ddec 3 and 4 are rounded and are flared in the head. You will have to use ddec 3 or 4. 12 or 14 L doesnt matter as long as it is ddec 3 or 4. just remember the egr motors use different intake manifold.

I remember about intake manyfolds.. Ok, can I use DDEC-4 14 L head (engine had EGR) with 12.7 Injectors?
-
The ddecIV egr engines used a standard IV head but the ex valves are sodium filled and the manifold was coated to prevent corrosion from egr gas. 14L ddecIV's are not very common in the US but i know many people that have built them from ddecV cores and used the heads of ddecIV 12.7's so the heads can be interchanged but you need to know what level ddec you have. So in short the info junkyardkid gave you is accurate you need to use the head that matches the inj's and ecm you plan on using.
Smellfunny and junkyardkid Thank this. -
Ok, I need cyl. head from 14L DDEC-IV and I can fit injectors from 12.7 and use this head on 12.7 engine...
