On a flatbed I would hope so unless you want to die.

Listen, I don't need BS answers or dumb opinions, it's a serious question!!!

Regulations do not require you to have a headache rack anymore.
yes, it's good measure for safety to a certain point, but if you secure properly then you shouldn't need it, and besides a piece of Alumnium isn't going to stop a coil or steel pipe from coming into your cab anyways. I prefer it just for the added storage, it's very convienent.
But the answer is NO, not required.Logan76, MackDaddyMark and DieselDummy Thank this. -
actually ,i thought it answered the question, no matter what the law says.

Ok, thanks for the legitimate answers, you guys would not happens to know the rule number would you?

There is no specific rule number anymore for it as they removed the rule that it WAS required.
now there are only rules for frontend structures if the cargo is in CONTACT with it. Which means you are using it as part of your securement. -
No headache rack or headboard needed. If not running either you need extra securement on the load. I do not run one and just put an extra strap or chain in the 1st 4 ft of the load. Headboard or racks good for storage but i've seen plenty of loads go right through and over them. Gives to many drivers a good feeling and makes em lazy on there securement.
DieselDummy Thanks this.
