Running solo for about six months with SWIFT back in 2003 found out my dad had a rare terminal cancer of the eye. I had a real good DM at the time, told my DM that I was leaving the tractor in the Otay swift yard in San Diego CA. about 90 miles away from the main swift yard in Fontana CA. and about 20 miles from my dads house. My DM just said OK, like it was no big deal. I'm glad I walked away. I had two years with my dad before he died in may of 2005. But looking back I had worked so hard to get that solo OTR run that at times wonder how things would have worked out if I stayed with the truck. Do not recall any bad marks on my record other than one service failure at that time, but it did push my driving career way back, swift just marked it down as me quiting as a satisfactory driver. We can always get another job driving, but we can never get back time with a loved one after there gone. My condolences go out to you for your loss.

9/30/2007, my mother passed away. 7/2/1981, 26 years earlier, my father passed away. 2008 and later, I had called various trucking companies and mentioned this to them, along with the fact that I have never married and never had any children. I had been contemplating the possibility of becoming a professional over the road truck driver. Quite often, their response was this: "We can keep you out on the road for longer periods of time".
It took me awhile to realize that a lot of the married drivers often put in requests for more home time to be with their families. This can also apply for drivers needing time to look after an aging parent as well. The sad fact is that trucking companies are not set up for or "geared" for family people trying to be good parents or caretakers, due to the nature of the job, which requires extended periods of time on the road. It is amazing that there is NOT a greater shortage of over the road truck drivers all throughout the U.S.A.. -

Not sure why you're directing that at me dip ####....I am the one that said I DID NOT abandon my truck during MY experience with the topic of this thread. Don't jump down MY throat because you hate your self little boy. Get off the C.B. & cell phone, and pay attention to what you're doing....can't read, and I'm darn sure you can't drive. Now go kill yourself. -
