Hello,
I am in AR and the oilfeild is starting to dry up here and I am looking into a career as a "hot shot" BUT i have no idea where to start!! I would like to try and find a company to lease onto that will keep me busy and would consider helping out getting my DOT #s. Staying away from home alot isn't an issue and i would attempt to venture out on my own but i simply don't have the contacts or start up capital at this moment! Looking into getting a 1ton dualy with a gooseneck trailer so i would need to stay busy to come out on top. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated! If this doesn't work out my family and i are going to have to completly pick up and move with the oilfeild so needing info before it comes to that!!
THANKS
New Career in hot shot!! HELP PLEASE!!

First of all there isn't much true hotshot work . I have seen several good , experienced hotshotters leave the industry the past few years.
If you lease on with a carrier you don't have to worry about getting DOT numbers . You will use theirs.
You should not try starting on a shoestring. Starting without a $10,000 sets you up for disaster . -
Hot shooting isn't what its all cracked up to be .Its a hard business to keep busy.Unless you have good contacts .Dont work off load boards ,they will break you .Ive seen hotshotters come and go .Takes a lot of dedication & hard work.Id say build yourself a bank acct with moneys just in case .like RickG says 10 k is a good starting point.i myself have been hots hotting for a bit ,but i have dedicated runs .you really need to make $4k to $6k a week to keep going .A lot of expenses come out of this moneys .
another thing is it will take you around $250 to $300 a day to run daily, depending on your truck and load .This is just a start.Along with motels, food, break downs,And whatever else comes up .
good luck on your endeavor .
if you want to stay in the oil business with hot shot .go to texas ,midland area ,lots of oil stuff going on there ,also the dakotas are hot now .make the money while you can . -

Dot numbers take ten minutes to get online.
It's the rest that takes time and money.
Mc authority, insurance, business end, inspections, etc.
You should have some start up capital and do your homework.
Jmho.
It will be easier to lease on to someone. I doubt though many would help you get started on your own. They make money on u now. -
Hotshot trucking, or the form of hotshot I run is quite good and I don't understand how people could disagree with that. I'm getting the same, if not more money than the full size semi's going down the road. If you are interested in talking, private message me your phone number and I might be able to help you out.
SHC Thanks this. -
I was just reading this post you made about the type of driving you do, I want to get into the industry and was wondering what type of driving you do, loads you haul, equipment you use, and money you can expect to make. I appreciate anything you can inform me of. I tried to PM you but the system won't let me since I'm new, so if you can please PM me, thanks.
