i will be running straights from the bottom up on my setup and will run something like a 40" or so muffler below before the Y this for me has held up to be enough to make me happy in the truck and keep the DOT looking away.

That's another reason "Joe Citizen" has no respect for truckers.

i ran my 89 ford superduty with a 7.3 diesel non turbo for a month straight piped. i tell you what the first few days it was cool and then after that you start to baby the throttle because its so loud. and if you have a headache . it sucked then i put a muffler back on. i dont think there is anything louder that a straight piped non turbo diesel. lol i even like my ironhead harley straight piped but the truck was to much.

Ok, I'm an old fuf wannabe, what I do know is that unmuffled pipes are friggin loud, and you will attract unwanted attention. Straight pipes look way cool, but theres a fine line between a nice rumble and obnoxious. And like someone else posted, tintinitus sucks.
    Take care.

I just love how Harley's are encouraged to be loud...I can't stand those things. But the straight pipes on my truck are frowned up on...even though the Harleys are typically louder and driven more obnoxiously.

I love straights on a diesel.

That was my idi diesel. Not the same but I still love all diesel trucks with straights regardless.

I think some of you guys have problems with reading comprehension. He wasn't asking what your opinion on harleys or straight pipes was, he wanted to know what was legal. Now I'll tell you, as long as you have a visible muffler you'll be fine, on a Pete the best place to put one is behind the passenger side tool box, or you can buy resonators that are pressed into the stack.

The law is 92 decibles, maximum noise period.
I have seen truckers remove mufflers, and these guys ran a regular wrought, and their fuel economy went down.
An engine is engineered to have a certain amount of back preasure, When you remove the back preasure, the cam timing is off cycle, and it alows cooled intake air threw the cylinder on valve overlap cooling the exhaust slowing the turbo down. Loss of heat in the exhaust costs you boost, that is the ability to make the torque you need.
I realise there are truckers that know everything, and those engineers just do not know how to make the real HP and Torque.
One other thing a decibel meter is less than a hundred dollars, and some cop sitting on a hill when you come down to their town can collect a lot of money, all those towns, they do not want your money, yea right.
