The cheap way is never the best way.....ever. If you are strapped for the money to go to a community college there are dozens of ways to get student aid...all you have to do is look for them.
What's the cheapest trucking school you can find?

I did 8 weeks through community college and it cost about $2500. 4 weeks were spent in class and 4 weeks of sharing the driving. I could easily forgo the 4 weeks of daydreaming for 1 week of classroom while 4 weeks driving is fine. I can't see 1 week of class/driving as giving enough confidence to even start with a trainer, but thats me. All in all, the best education comes from a rock solid, experienced trainer for the company.

Sheridan Technical Institute in Broward county, Florida is a public school, $2000 for 9 weeks, 320 hrs and 1000 miles driven throughout the course. This is where I am going in a month or two.

Foodlink in Sacramento, 18 weeks and costs about $300,(whatever the DMV process costs), 6 weeks classroom, 6 weeks range and 6 weeks driving experience if you get your test early enough.
The kicker is avg 30 to a class and you have to do some warehouse work and drive straight truck sometimes to pick up food donations, as payback for your next to free training. Because they have such large classes the rules are rigid, and its a long course; maybe too long for someone who needs work pronto.
Personally i enjoyed it, made some good friends and ended up working there as a driver for nearly 2 years. Horses for courses i guess. -
