Yea, to the OP - who the #### are you getting prices from?
You can overhaul an entire Detroit for around $11-14k. Including the bull gear.
$22k is an overhaul on a CAT.....

What about a crate motor? -
I was in at the local Interstate Power (detroit diesel shop) up here.
$7500-9000 for a level 1,
$11-13K for a level 2,
$17-18K for a level 3
and $22-24K for a level 4 (crate motor)

Its going to cost $11,000 the biggest part of the price is to replace the drive gear on the crank its missing a tooth as well so they need to pull everything in front off to pull the old one off and press the new one on.

holly crap...i can buy a whole new 12.7 from detroit in pittsburgh for 13000 with a 5 year warr if they install 3yr if i install
-
why not to fix geartraine only. it is old engine, some parts may be reused from JY. It would not be too expencive
-
the $11,000 is fixing just the gear train
-
Hi McDaniel,
These are pieces from your power steering pump drive.
ISF -
We've just finished building '96 12.7. Yep, we reused many parts from JY but it was less $1000. I do not think all the gears must be replaced. Inspect all parts one by one and change worn parts only!
really no reason to push #11,000 to this engine. It is easier swap engine with used one -
I had it towed to Detroit the popped the cover off and all gears needed to be replace all had part or whole tooth missing lucky it didn't get out of time or it would of been a whole motor. I didn't have much choice I need the truck going now if I had all winter to work on it it wouldn't matter but I landed a job for a possible 10 weeks hauling gravel I don't have the time or tools to do it in the drive way. I know its more than I should put in it but I'm in a bind and need it asap so I'm paying Detroit the $110hr labor to get it in and out but the shop manager says it slow and has 2 guys working on it and is NOT charging me for both just one.
