Hat's off to the truckers... nothing but respect and admiration from this 57 yr old cage'r and biker. I have been driving our nations hiways and biways for over 40 years and have often daydreamed what it would be like sitting in your seat as we passed each other out there? So, I've been doing a little research in the past months... here and over at truckingtruth.com.
I retired about 2 years ago from the DoD (35 years including my military time)... but some how (now) I have it in my brain that driving a truck would be a good way to pass time until I hit 62 - at that time the wife will retire. I'm in good shape physically, no traffic tickets of any kind - ever. My employment record is about as solid as you can get - except for goofing off for the last 2 years on my pension... :]
From what I can tell... 57 is not too old to get hired as a newbie and i have the finances to put myself through a pretty good school nearby (Sage). So, anyways - just thinking a lot these days about all of this - and wanted to say hello!
a salute... and hello

right now she plans to remain in her current job for the next 5 years, then retire at 62... of course current political winds and the economy could change all this?!

Your age won't even factor in as far as being hired by a trucking company. Thousands of drivers out there now much older than you. Two big issues right now are blood pressure and sleep apnea; if you have either problem, get it under control before a company DOT physical. Since you haven't started school yet, you have plenty of time to get any issues in order & start your search for a good company.

I've been searching and think Sage would be my school choice - can't find too many negatives on them. No physical issues that I know of... I do take a statin to keep my cholesterol in check.
Actually the main 3 things holding me back are... the total training costs (school, lodging, meals, etc is ridiculous), the time required to drive with a company trainer... AND the fear of falling back into terrible eating habits.
