And me? I moved from Manitoba to Alberta and BC just to end up in Manitoba again. I feel like my parole was revoked. This spring I'm moving back to the west and staying there. I made money out west, far more then I make here. The wife likes it here, but I sure don't.

This industry is what you make it. If your a hard worker and dependable, you'll do well. You'll most likely have to start out working for a smaller company. I suggest you should figure out what area you would like to spend your career in.
For example.
If you want to haul equipment. Focus your search on deck companies or even construction.
I have been behind the wheel for 14 years now. I started at 18 and love trucking. Yes some jobs have a lot of unpaid work but at the end of the day it's still a good living. You have a lot of freedom in trucking. Just need to find your path.
My last word of advice. Don't listen to the negative people. 9 times out of 10 they're miserable in general. I work 70 hours a week and made over a 100k a year as a company driver pulling pikes on the prairies. Haven't made under 75k in the last 6 years.rainyday lover Thanks this. -
The issue was - Is there really a driver shortage? If you go on Kijiji, I do see more and more o/o's looking for work. In addition, I noted a article in a trucking magazine I believe Truck West - and they had a few Danish people coming over here to examine common trucking practises because they admit there is a GLUT of drivers back home. They state that truck drivers there make an extremely low wage because of too many drivers.
A number of months ago, Jason Rhyno from Todays Trucking attended a Western conference in Alberta, who listened to the likes of Westcan and other known low paying companies whine about needing to attract drivers from overseas.
I've met some of these people who have been recruited, and they've reported how little they really do make.
Is it not possible that these large trucking firms try to create a massive glut in all areas of trucking to be able to offer lower wages?
In another edition of Today's Trucking, May 2012, again, Jason Rhyno writes how the industry will be requiring another million people in the trucking industry. Its frustrating to see that even Canadian Editors either turn a blind eye to the fact that we really dont need another million drivers, or they are just so snugly in bed with them.
Today, completely unrelated to the trucking industry - I noticed a few articles relating to a mining company that only employed the Chinese. The company stated that they couldnt find enough Canadians to do the work right now. Im believing that they are not paid what a Canadian would have been paid.

It is my belief that as a very small business owner that I DONT need to go outside the boundries of Canada to find a mature, experienced driver who wants to work for a straight up balanced company.
I cant believe that of the many individuals who are either unemployed, or are in a bad working condition that I cant find a driver made right here in Canada.rainyday lover and Tam_Tam Thank this. -
I am new to this, and I have been watching the adds on kijiji, with respect to trucking companies hiring class 1 drivers. After watching the adds for the last three weeks I have noticed that some of these companies are there every day posting for drivers. When I click on the add it informs me that 8000 hits on the add as of today. My question is 8000 hits on the add in three weeks and still looking for a driver? What are these companies doing?
