The engine weighed around 2000 lbs. The pac brake was a problem, but it actually did work after it was repaired.
I had forgotten about that. There is a bushing around the shaft in those that goes out, and causes an exhaust leak smell that isn't easily found. This causes the actuator to wear oout and bind.
The break will stick shut sometimes and needs to be tied out or the truck has no power at all. After it was fixed and working right, it was great going across PA, and you could use it without worry because it made no extra noise at all. The noise it made at first was because of the leaking bushing.
I put around 200k on one that had 670 k on it when it left, no problems other than the brake which was shot when I got into it. Don't pull really hard below about 1250 rpm, run it higher in the power band and it does ok.
They were designed for about 600k before needing work. Many did better than that.

yea we have an 05 with mbe4000 and we are second owner, we searched it out too. our truck gets 7.5 -8.6 depending how heavy we are she will pull up at 55 mph in donners pass with 40k. we have had this truck since april had to put new exhaust clamp at the top of stack, piece of exhaust pipe under bunk, bracket at alternator belt, 4 batteries and we have been pretty happy with this truck too.Last edited: Dec 15, 2012
carwreck Thanks this. -
I have ran one since June 05. Got the truck brand new, and spec'd it myself.
Head gaskets were covered under warranty with a new design, got all cylinder kits replaced FOC too. That was @350k IIRC.
Due to my own fault really, spun a gasket after a $155 injector nozzle cracked. Flooded a cylinder, diluted oil, etc. Put a 230k miles junkyard motor in it, replaced all HG's as a precaution, and been fine since then (@3yrs ago).
The turbo brake is good, exhaust brake is junk. I have the turbo brake, which was an option. I am plated at 117k lbs and it does the jpob.
MPG has always been better than Cats, Cummins and DD's. When I was on blades this summer, another driver had a ISX. At every fuel stop he was putting on an extra $100-120 than I was. Same load, same time, same roads. If the MPG is bad, then get the ecm looked at by someone that knows what they are doing with the MBE motors. Bad parameters will cause these things major headaches.
My empty weight is also a big help, as I pull 6 axle freight with 5 axles and get paid for 6!
EGR was blocked off years and years ago, so no issues there neither
Just about to put a programmer on it to boost the HP a little, as they are only a 12.8l 450 after all.
Overall, good experience from this long time owner.
