I got the job at Azstar Transportation at NJ. I'm a rookie, just got my CDL in October and when I visit Azstar, I was told that I will be on road 5 days, off every weekend, and flexible home time. So I have 2 young kids (2 & 1) so I figured it not too bad since I can't get local job (they want 6months-1year experience). So I accept the job. I was told i will be paid $400 per trip for 4 trips since I am student grad. Ok.. that sucks but $400 for 5 days, i can tolerate that.

My first trip, December 4th at 3am. I was paired with driver. We headed out and made first stop in Indiana. Then head out to Colorado, South Dakota, Washington, California, Arizona, then Massachusetts and finally back home in NJ. The problem is?? 10 freaking days!! When we finally in yard, I spoke to the woman. Now she saying, ohhh sometimes, 6 days, 7,8,9 and I add 10, 11,12,13! And I brought up pay. Am I getting paid more since it was more than 5 days? Nope. I'm getting $400. That break up $40 per day, 10-11 hours per day driving. About less than $4.00 per hour. She smiles and says, that trucking! So I won't be really home every weekend? No.. Why you said yes at first time and change your story after I finish my first trip? I drank kool aid and got baited into ########.

My question is, is that legal?! Can that company do that?! There a poster on wall that says home every weekend. I even took picture of that. Now I'm afraid my next trip will be 10 days or worst, more.. for $400.. I'm gonna contact NJ state of labor and ask questions. I want hear you guys too.. The reason i took this job so i can be home on weekends. If i want go more than 10 days, I would've gone to Schneider, Roehl, etc. At least I get my own truck, not teaming, slip seating. Azstar doesn't even own any trucks. they rented it from ryder and have contract with company they provided referrer trailer.

your opinion, advices please! Thank you!

not sure if its legal...seems as if it should not be. they told you and advertise one thing, and give you something else entirely. sounds like a bait and switch to me. but heres your problem...legal or not, you agreed to work for them, and the alternative now is quit and look for a different job. slipseat AND team? worst of both worlds if you ask me. two things that wouldve sent me running fast. if they are willing to lie to you so dam blatantly in your first week, about something so HUGE, how can you trust anything they say later? my advice would be look for a better deal elsewhere. if you need to, keep your crappy current gig while looking, but look in earnest. thats trucking? no, its not. the trucking world is not THAT full of liars, im curious, what are they saying you will make once youve done your 4 trips? because a new grad can expect low pay, but ive never heard of lower pay than the pay youve been promised for training.

you are better than me, i would have come back to the terminal, and once that chick said that foolishness, i would have been on my way home

its one thing for folks to stretch the truth, its another to lie and smirk about it as if its all a joke, this is your livelihood, and NO ONE should screw with that

as much as i hate companies, i would go to usxpress before setting foot back into that place again

They said i will make .34cent a mile (split, team) after i complete 4 trips. I agreed, it not trucking. it's thief!

4 trips. But i got screwed real good. A trip can be 10 days or more. Just like I just did. Was told 5 days. But ended up 10 days. Same pay. $400

Oh I was furious. But had to keep my emotion in check. I rather take high road instead of being a person ripping my hair off, shouting profanity and kicking. I was cabinetmaker for 14 years til the market for cabinetmaker/carpentry is dead for now. I get lied and screwed little but I have never encounter so much lies and screwin' and that was my first job, 10 days comparing 14 years in cabinetmaking field. That fat lady actually says that trucking. I wonder would she sing the same song if the situation was reverse. Probably not.

You're in the hiring area for Maverick & they have a good reputation for weekends home.
Your only other option may be food service or grocery companies.
Leave your present company on good terms or they can ruin your DAC report.

About the legal part, if the contract you signed with them states you work 4 - 5 days then get 2 days off, then you have legal grounds, if the contract does not state this, then they can do what they want when they want. I went through C.R. England school and its the same thing very little pay to start and if you want to be a company driver rather than take the " flease " ( lease ) then you could stay out up to 6 months before going home. I would recommend staying with the company until you get at least 3 months experience then switch to a better company.
