My wife is determend to get me one of these for Christmas. My question is what are pros and cons of the Rand mcnally and the cobra. Not sure the model numbers but the 7inch screens.

I have the R/M 510 and have had it a year now.I'm completely satisfied and glad I didn't get the 7". I couldn't imagine driving down the road with a mini plasma tv on the windshield.

I've got the 5in Rally Mcnally. Its just fine for its purpose as long as you keep the maps updated. The most useful features I've found are the truckstop/POI locators and the ETA calculator. I also use mine to track when PM's are due, fuel mileage, and several other things. I will say its not infallable. I've had it route me through restricted routes (usually these are where a local town, city, or county has restricted CMV traffic by weight, length, or HM that are not listed in the big book). I've also had it try to take me down roads that no longer exist or are just absolutely retarded when you look at them. Common sense is key here. I still have the big book sitting right up on the dash board next to the GPS to cross reference (unless I'm familiar with the area or route already) and I still reference shipper/receiver provided directions as these sometimes conflict with what the GPS says.

    JohnBoy Thanks this.

If you're going to get the 7" Rand, make sure it's the new 720 model. The 710 was a POS. Traded mine for a 510. Been very happy with it.

I have the 5inch PC Miller now and it works good. Like as stated above, it has tried to get me in some places I shouldnt have been in but the big map and common sence is the most important. I just figured if she is determined then it wouldnt hurt to have a back up just incase something happens to one of them. I run regional and for the most part run a lot of the same routes and places regualry so I dont use the gps as much as most probably. Didnt even think about looking at the garmin but Ill check it out as well.. Thanks

I use a garmin nuvi 456t. You can find them for under $200 and I've used it for two years. It's a very good gps and ill use it till I can no longer get it updated. Best $ I've spent.
