I'm going to offend someone, but don't mean to. I drove for PAM for 14 months and got out of trucking for the last 8. Now, circumstances have pushed me back into the trucking business. I have a college education. Any other drivers out there with a college education. Honestly, I feel like a loser. Graduated from a good school and I'm driving a truck.

What degree did you earn and from where if you don't mind me asking?

Could be worse. I have heard many stories about people with masters degrees and PHD's flipping burgers at fast food joints.

you are not alone, you are not doing it by choice but amazingly there is lots of highly educated people that are because they got tired of what they were doing and found this better suited them. There is no shame in it, honest days pay for an honest days work.

I got my BS in Computer Science from the University of California Riverside plus one year of grad school. There is money to be made in trucking and who knows what the future holds for you. I love my job and can't imagine me doing anything else.
DocWatson and amwilletts10 Thank this. -
There are quite a few of us who are in this business who have a college education. Some of us have advanced degree's. There is nothing wrong with having a college degree and driving a truck. Drivers can often earn more than many with a college degree right out of school. You are never a loser as long as you don't give up. I have a niece with a masters degree and she is having a difficult time finding a full time job. I don't see why you would think of yourself as a loser as long as you are doing your best and earning a decent living. You are working in probably the most critical single industry that is vital to all commerce in this nation. Virtually everything that is used, consumed, worn or driven in this country relies on trucking. There are a lot of college graduates looking for work. I have a friend who's son graduated from a major university who is working as a waiter in an upscale restaurant. It doesn't make any difference what you do for a living. Having a college degree doesn't necessarily guarantee that you will be working in your field or even working period.Dewey120 Thanks this. -
Many of us out here driving truck have a college education. I had a fulfilling career and now am back on the road with the job that helped me pay for college back in the '80s. Why do you feel like a loser? You're adapting to a sinking economy, that gives you a leg up on many. I'm enjoying the heck out of my second career even though I'm at what many consider the bottom rung on the ladder just coming back to the road. Head's up, if you feel like a loser you can't be enjoying your job and if you're not enjoying your job you need to make a move and find another career or at least another job.

If you can't find a job related to your degree, than I don't see anything wrong with getting into the trucking industry. If you do happen to find a job related to your degree while you are driving, then get out of the trucking industry and take that job. Trucking is one of the worst indudtries in the world and will only get worse.

There are probably thousands of drivers with degrees. You will meet many of them on this forum. In a way it's like the military, you will find a cross section of American society serving in the military & a cross section of American society driving trucks. I've met drivers that didn't make it past elementary school due to a hard family life & former high ranking military officers, and those with degrees of all levels & we all found common ground with a work ethic that allows us to do what is necessary to care for our families.

Based on the large number of well written posts around here, it seems many of these drivers are pretty well educated. Whether that occurred in school or elsewhere doesn't really matter. I have an MBA from a good B-school and am looking into trucking, but my emphasis is on it as a business rather than just a job. Nevertheless, I will drive at least for the first few years.
