So what are "WE ALL" learning from this post anyway?
What I have learned is that a broker wants a bid and gets miffed if nobody bothers to play hide and seek with him.
A good broker would have posted a rate with the load.
Period. -
First, that is not how the expedite industry works. We have an agreement that we charge a $50 fee and bring the customer options. It is understood and accepted in the industry that you bid on freight as it becomes available. There are certain customers that "buy" the market with stupid high rates. But most customers do not want to play that game.
And so we are clear, unless you have someone new in the market these loads are not cheap.
What business owners should learn is the "not enough miles" is a BS statement based on a fixed revenue per mile. For a cargo van those miles would normally pay less than $200. So if someone wanted 600 miles or $550 dollars they should have bid $550.
Turns out the customer paid $950 to have a tractor move the single pallet. Only needed a cargo van or sprinter.
BTW, this is not an LTL. This was exclusive use, pick up and drive straight through. -

Makes me think seriously about two things. Leasing my personal pickup and 25' cargo van to my business for opportunities like this. Of course as already mentioned, considering insurance and the hassle of lettering it and adding one mo ifta thing to keep track of. That rig wouldn't be burly enough for more than a few pallets, but then I'm not in the hotshot business either. Another thing I've considered, but less seriously, is cutting a deal to lease my Dad's Kodiak/flatbed. He's a private hauler, but I'm pretty certain the insurance cost will make that a non-starter.

My brother pulls a 24ft single wheel gooseneck is under 26,000lbs so he don't do ifta he pays $3,000 a year for insurance with 100,k cargo he has no over head

I don't understand why people insist on exclusive use of the trailer for small stuff like this. As long as the product gets picked up and delivered on time, why should it matter if I have something else onboard?
If I have space, weight, and time to spare, I try to look for little LTLs like these. Sadly, more often than not, they throw in that "exclusive" word, or they want direct expedited service for a LTL rate. I mean the whole idea of LTL is to be able to work in more LTLs as you go along, this requires open flexible dates. More and more, I don't even bother checking on it. Tired of the games. There are lots of TL trucks passing by that might could make a pit stop and grab this, more than there are cargo vans available. If you want to cover loads, get serious with the price and stop wasting my time. -
The problem is that most people who are looking for cargo to ship don't have a concept of what LTL means, hence why you see "LTL" loads posted taking up half the length and half the legal weight of a trailer paying a ridiculous rate.

When someone is paying expedite rates it is because they have a time sensitive need. Having your freight sit for a several extra hours while someone else loads freight is not acceptable.
But remember, loads we work with are not only paying premium rates, you are getting loaded and MT ASAP. No sitting on a load over night to deliver in the morning.windsmith, rollin coal and LSAgentOZR Thank this. -
And that, good sir is the real beauty of expedite!rollin coal and BigBadBill Thank this.
