That is exactly why I don't run east of Ohio (and North of NC) for less than $4 mile to the truck. That way I can keep a $2 mile round trip avg IF I've got to DH all the way back due to loads or rates. I do the same with Texas and Florida as well. There are not too many loads that pay that well going into those areas, so I don't go there very often at all. But if it comes up or is offered, I take it. Unless it's this time of year, then I don't go into PA at all. I know it's not horrible (I've driven it many years) but I feel that now i have more choices to go elsewhere, so why mess with all those roads and especially I-64 and all it's closures as soon as the snow starts to fly.
Where is everyone?

To each their own, but it seems insane to run trucks additional miles to respect seniority. Our company trucks are paid mileage, but reloads are based on the closest truck, then on when they empty. Once in a while you have to add in what type of trailer each driver has or if the load requires skills that some of the drivers may not have. On a given day we may have 5+ get empty in Baltimore on the same day, the early bird gets the worm (load).Logan76, SHC and volvodriver01 Thank this.

I agree with ya Logan I run up to NE alot and the rates coming out aren't the greatest almost considering getting the Bossman to purchase a Dry Van or a Refer money seems to be about the same although I wonder If there are better rates for Refer running to/from Midwest/South To East Coast then Flatbed. just my $0.02

I dunno mark, I'm paid .43 a mile if im pulling a flat or a van, but our van work is slim, maybe a few loads a week and they spread them out alot between all of the drivers...
-
It seems strange to be paid the same pulling a van or flat. You are right that there would be very little incentive to pull a flat if you don't get paid additional.
Logan76 Thanks this. -
Especially since they pay us 15$ to tarp, load and unload, and tear down a sidekit...
So i guess if you take a flatbed load and tarp, you get paid 45$ extra on the entire trip, not much motivation to me... -
cpape, how was your holiday?
I did not hear on the news of any trucking office people going postal last week in Ia. That's good.
Hope you and your family have a good holiday and good new yearvolvodriver01 Thanks this. -
I guess everyone does things their own way. Our open deck drivers are paid .04 additional on all miles they run. It was just easier than pay tarp/untarp, load/unload pay. They tarp less than a third of their loads. They also get paid additional for oversize, which they haul quite a bit. We also pay additional for loads under 225 miles.Logan76, volvodriver01 and SHC Thank this.

Vacation was great. Just the right length. There were no major blow ups, but JDP and the rest of the staff were ready for my return.
Enjoy your time out of the cold. -
Yes I plan on enjoying the weather. My wife says it's hot at the house. In the 80's..I told her she should be here in the cold with me.
funny thing the other day. With all the bad weather coming I never told her about it,because I knew she would worry.
Well I get a phone call Thurs. midday from her.
Where are you?
She then tells me the storms made the news in Thailand because of how strong they were and closing roads..
I tell her I'm ok and parked.volvodriver01 Thanks this.
