When taking per diem you are electing to take your road deduction now but, when you don't take per diem you are electing to take your deduction at the end of the tax year (provided you file). HOWEVER, where the per diem screws you over is holiday and vacation pay. You get post deduction pay amounts on those (the lesser amount), whereas without per diem you get paid on the full amount (pre deduction amount). SNI wants you on per diem because it saves them money. Ask specifically if your vacation pay will be the same amount on either plan. The answer is no if they give you an honest answer. Don't let the fancy little chart fool you, it is sans vacation.

Looking at my last check at SNI I got $945.65 a week for my vacation pay (co. driver, 3 weeks a year) but if I had been on per diem it would have only been about $500-550 if I had been on per diem rate. If you set your number of deduction correctly you can get less tax taken out so you have more in your pocket now but won't get a refund later. I typically have chosen between 8-10 even though we are a family of four to compensate for itemized deductions that lowered my liabilities. If you don't know how to estimate this, ask someone that does. If you guess too high, you will owe tax when filing; guess too low and you will get a refund.

I'm confused on your statement for vacation pay? Pier diem vacation is gross +per diem.
