I'm not the driver, so forgive my ignorance... My husband drives team for a company that will not allow their trucks to use chains. While lots of other trucks (I80 from ID to WY) were told to put on chains or shut down, they had to shut down; most of the other trucks were putting chains on to keep going. Can anyone tell me if this is a common protocol, and if so, why?
Company says no chains?!?

I'm not a driver either
But I have talked to a few and read a lot ... And Yes, it seems common with some carriers from what I have read ..
US Xpress says, if you put on chains and anything happens while your on the road, its automatically a preventable accident .. they figure if the roads are bad enough to use chains, it time to shut it down.. -
A friend's son drove for Covenant, they had the same policy. They carried chains, but weren't allowed to use them.

I'm thinking companies that prescribe to that way of thinking have employees with little or no "bad weather" experience. In that case its a good idea.....

Well, I am a driver, and here is my thoughts on this. If it is bad enough to need chains, there is NO REASON for me to drive. Do you really want him to drive when it is that bad? You make it sound like it's a bad thing to shut down during a storm. Trust me, it's not.
The only reason I would use chains is to get to a safe place to park.
Be grateful he doesn't have to chain.SHC, Buffalo Chip, Emulsified and 7 others Thank this. -
glad i don't work for a company that doesn't allow chains.
i need to make money. not sit around for who knows how long.
but i also don't work for a dac company. so if a car runs into me. that's there fault for driving too fast for conditions.58Skylane, nctrucker1977, Stump and 2 others Thank this. -
That's funny...I worked at USXpress and was never made aware of that. We ran chains plenty. I'm not sitting in a truck stop for a week, because of a little snow. Lots of times you don't even need chains when they make you use them. Coming from Oregon into Cali last year we had to chain up to get over the hill. Wasn't any snow on the ground for a mile or two. Went over the hill and through the snow, come back down the other side and then took them back off. Are you gonna really stop driving because you have to have chains to get over a 3-5 mile stretch???

By the way, even if your company says no chains allowed, you better have them on the truck. -
I don't need chains per say too driving , i will never do that, i will shut down first, how ever i will chain up if mean's getting back up too the dock , so i don't slide into the other truck , so there plenty reason ,not too chain, or to chain.
SHC Thanks this. -
I am glad I don't work for a company that makes you use chains... , its too easy to wait it out and watch a movie and be a little late, winter doesnt last forever and I don't need the money that bad I need to work in nasty weather. We can use them if we REALLY want to , but I am sure any accident would be considered preventable also , makes sense since it would be.

chain or not chain
when i was out west, you were a wuss if you didnt chain
those guys out there live to chain, they called the rest of us "flatlanders" and laughed
they loved it
i couldnt stand the idea of chaining
so some may feel if its time to chain, its time to shut down
others feel if you cant chain, stay off the road
it works out best for everyonekw9's rock, DoneYourWay, jakebrake12 and 2 others Thank this.
