Detroit mechanic advised me not to buy engine with EGR they are having way too many problems with them, and I believe Cummins are the same. But if you totally remove/delete the EGR system and have the ECM flashed then they are as good as a Pre EGR engine. ( not legal but I would not hesitate to do the mods). I believe the Cat engines don't have EGR and instead use 2 x DPF thereby reducing engine temps and increasing engine life, If you want to keep the truck legal then I would buy a Cat and make sure the DPF stay clean to allow exhaust gases to flow better and keep the EGT down.

    Aussiedave,the OP works in Canada.
In Canada (or the USA) you cannot buy a new Cat anymore.
Cat sold it's engineplants to International in 2010.
So you advice is a little out of date.:biggrin_25521:

I'd take new Detroit, they seem to be the only US engine manufacturer these days who know how to build engines.

Western Star and a DD16 all the way for what you are doing. I have heard lots of good things about the big Detroit's. Western Star makes one hell of a good vocational truck too.

Must be nice to be in an area where you can buy a new truck and make a living hauling logs with it! Down here in the South most of the log trucks are worn out long haul rigs. Most are driven through hell on farms to get to loading site and are torn to pieces!

Oh ####, that's sux! Cat seems to have sorted the EPA #### out with a sound solution. And you guys can't buy them there, maybe CAT will sell in USA in the future once they are sure their dual DPF setup is totally successful .

You could do a glider western star and have a Cat or any motor you want. The DD15 and DD16 are great motors from what I hear but you are going to pay a more for the Detroit than the Cummins.

Aussie Dave , so their selling 013 kws with cat engines and 2 dpfs down there? If they are anything like what they sold in the US "run for the hills".

To the op, new western star go with Detroit, glider go with any motor you want. I'd do the glider!
