iv got a 95 fld 120 I bought from a farmer 6 months or so ago. put back into service. after i got it home i found the over powering smell of air fresheners was covering up the over powering smell of mice. after multiple throughout cleanings of the entire inside of the truck first using de-greasers then cleaned the entire inside with diluted bleach twice. the inside of the truck is now odor free until you kick on the hvac system. then you still get a very faint odor. I have run a 1 inch vacuum hose threw all of the vents. i am wondering if this truck has cab air filters, and if it does where are they located i want to try changing them out and see if that gets rid of the last of the odor. The remaining odor is very faint and only when you are using the hvac system to the point the smell is hardly noticeable. If that does not work my next course of action will be to take everything apart manually clean the inside of the vents heater cores ect not something i look forward to but have obvious heath concerns more so than nose concerns with this remaining faint odor.

another thought is to crank all heat controls in the truck to full heat and let it run over night and try to burn whatever is left in there out. without me in the truck of course as it would be 100+ degrees in the truck if i did that let alone I wont sleep in the truck till i get rid of the remaining odor anyway. any tips would be appreciated.

I don't think the smell is coming from the under the bunk hvac i think its coming from the forward hvac. i know there is not a filter under the bunk this is where the mouse nest was on the truck there was not a filter on the bunk hvac and i think i cleaned that unit out pretty good. i actually used a high pressure pressure washer in this area as it was where the mouse city was found...lol i did not completely dissemble the vent system back there though and there might suppose to be a air filter down there that was just missing. i suppose i could try unpluging or turning off the bunk hvac and see if the smell goes away then i will know i need more cleaning of this system.

Is Hanta Virus up thar in ND? Be careful. There is no filters for these trucks. I made my own from the green foam filter media for AC units you can buy in the stores.

Hair and lint will hang up between the heat and AC cores so a truck that old would need a tedious complete disassembly of the cores and vents to clean all the crapola out of it. I have a '96 since it was new, so I know about it.

yeah next time i buy a truck 500 pine air fresheners in the truck will raise a bigger red flag....lol when i bought the truck i was literally thinking that there was just a bunch of awful air fresheners in the truck till i took them out. and even bigger surprise when i lifted the bunk..lol under the bunk after i scooped the village out i pre soaked with a degrease then removed a couple of the plugs from the floor and used a hot water pressure washer to clean everything out including the hvac unit under the bunk and then shop vac the remaining water out entire inside of the truck has been sanitized with bleach twice.

sounds like ill be likely dissembling the hvac system for its own though cleaning. obviously a pressure washer wont work under the dash, i want to try to avoid completely removing the heat and ac cores hopefully i can take them loose and scrub them clean remove the duct work and clean it outside the truck. any recommended methods or cleaners for doing this?

You can remove the blower motor and then get access to the cores. I am going to guess that mold is your problem. Get some oven cleaner and spray the spray the a/c core. Then use a garden hose to rinse. Look on the firewall for a rubber drain boot. Remove it and use a thin long screwdriver to gently check to see if it is plugged up. They very easily get plugged up in dusty conditions leading to standing water in the evaporator which causes the mold. If you really want to remove and clean the cores you have to loosen the center dash section and lower dash. Real PITA.

my 99 didnt have a filter but when I was in training a hundred yrs ago...ok maybe not that long but Im sure my first truck was a 95 and there was a filter right in front of unit in bunk.It was obvious to see.But maybe I was driving a classic versus a fld, getting old and some stuff just doesnt stay
