Thanks for all the info, I'm waiting for a call to find out if they have a contract or is working the dock payment for the cdl. I'll keep you posted. Going out on the road with my brother in law early tue morning to see exactly what he does. He said this will give me a good insight of the job. I'd driven company vehichles (just under cdl) for the last 7yrs.I love driving now time to get properly paid for it.

Going through unemployment to get in a program. They will pay $3500 and I pay $1200 to go to the Teamsters Local 251 Training Academy. I had to do research on the schools in my area. It was between Neets and Teamsters and I think teamsters will give me the best opportunity. :biggrin_255:

ok guys, listen up. as a con-way driver, i can tell you this...if you get a chance to get on with con-way and their cdl training. do it. it doesn't cost you a dime. you will go through the course during the day and you will work the docks at night. you will be paid under the classification of driver apprentice. somewhere around 10-12 bucks an hour. YOU NEVER HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING BACK TO CON-WAY FOR THE TRAINING. upon competion, you can take your cdl somewhere else and not be penalized for it. ( i think there should be a penalty, but there isin't) when you have your cdl you will be paid as a driver/ supplemental 5-7 more an hour. after 90 days you will will recieve full benefits and will be classified as a driver/ sales rep. every july you should get a raise. every december and february you might get a bonus. yes, we pull a lot of sets. mainly at nights as part of our linehaul runs. i pull them all the time in the city p&d operation. don't get scared...if you can make a right hand turn no problem with a 48 or 53, doing that with a set is 10 times easier.

also, findout if the terminal you are applying for is an FAC ( freight assembly center) if it is, you will work the dock for 8 hours and go home. no driving and no o/t. not unless a run gets passed down and you get the chance at it. i work out of a service center and i play the cards right. i drive the city and do p&d get back to the service center and go do another run and get a couple hours o/t everyday, then at least 3 out of the 5 days i'll do a line haul run at night. thats the good thing about working out of a service center rather than a FAC.

i have no idea. since it is the only conway in rhode island, i would assume that it is an fac. good thing is, after your school is done for the day, you will get a better shot at getting 8 hours. whereas if you were at a regular service center, you would only work a few hours. see what i'm sayin? as a student, the fac is good. as a rookie driver...not so good...i've got a buddy that drives a few times a month out of the fac because he has no seniority.
