You will see the majority of places with lumper services have 10 or more docks and unload freight at least 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I don't deliver to a lot of small places, but the ones I have delivered to (2-4 docks) had their own employees unloading the truck. You also have to consider the wide range in fees. I have paid as little as $35 to as much as $360 with no logic as to why. My first $200 lumper fee was in fl where labor is cheap. If A inc can do it for $35, and B inc charges $350, I want to own B inc.

 

Keep in mind, some loads just roll off and go on racks, some have to be broken down from 20 pallet to 35 or more to go on racks. That will greatly affect the cost to unload.

 

I paid $180 for a straight roll off (partial load) at us foods. The guy next to me had a load that had to be broken down by expiration date. He paid $140. Makes no dam sense. I think the lumper companies are raking it in at some locations. I'm just glad I don't pay it, because the lumper company got more revenue for 2 guys in 1.5 hrs Than I did to babysit a short load overnight.

I can't complain to much. When I owned a small business my cut off was $100/hr. less than that and I wouldn't do the job.

i've only had to deal with lumpers one time. when i hauled onions to florida 5 months ago. the fee was $75. to which NO one bothered to tell me.
i think they billed the broker though. i told them i have no cash and was never notified of a lumper fee. that was the last i heard of it.

that was my first and only experience.

I delivered a 3 stop load, all three places were roughly the same, 600-700 cases, 2-4 items, about the same number of pallets broken down. The stops were about $60, $85, and $140. The funny thing? The $85 and $140 were the same lumping company.

 

Present to myself...internet service hotspot...through tmobile. I was going to change to verizon but decided to give tmobile another shot...at less the cost than verizon. Time will tell.

After hometime over Christmas (I know, I was lucky...and I know it), my next load was just south of where I live so a quick 10 min drive and I would be there. However, I had bobtailed home so up to West Valley...an hour drive, to pickup an empty. Then go to the 01 to pickup...however, the trailer w/super singles has no chains and otrm wants me to get them ONLY at the terminal so I go back up to West Valley to get some chains (better be safer than sorry out on the road). Once I have the chains, I go back down past the 01 to start my route. Hmmm, the 01 was 10 min from my house, yet I go up an hour to West Valley, down an hour to the 01, back up to West Valley for another hour, then back down for another hour - a 4 hour back and forth that netted me...let's see - 0 miles. Oh well, I know that things like that happen. Then I thought later...what if I would have just taken some chains off another trailer (one of ours)...but that would have left someone else to go through the same thing I went through so I'm actually glad I didn't just 'take' another set of chains. And then, I'm running down south for now so don't need the chains...yet...headed to Houston area, then already preset to MS, LA, and then on to AZ.

You may get an mt trl move from crswvc to your 01. My miles to and from home never have any rhyme or reason.

 

at orientation we were told trucks are parked in the yard for the weekend.

but my truck has always came home. as if the company doesn't want to pay the miles unless it's enroute with a load. or don't want the trucks sitting at the yard. which doesn't bother me. cuz the last company wanted them in the yard. and i'm tired of driving back on forth on the weekend. messing up my 34.

drive through salt lake to the yard. come home. go back to pick up truck. come back to salt lake to deliver. then back up for next load. then back down enroute to delivery.

that's literally 540 extra driving miles between car and truck. and 9 hours out of my 34. just to park the dang truck.
