Most of the time I press the on button while holding the reset button about ten seconds and then release the reset button and then the on button.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I was on a run from Cleveland up into New Hampshire. The 720 routed me along I-90 / 86 / and 88. It was during the recent blizzard and I wasn't familiar if that way was more winding and hilly than 90 straight across; i also thought 90 might be better plowed. i kept having it recalculate (partly because my employer wants us to take 80 to avoid the tolls) but it always chose the 86/88 route. So when I came to the junction of 90/86 just outside of Erie, I stayed on 90. right at that point I checked the remaining mileage and on 86/88 it was 610. As soon as I passed the junction and it recalculated for 90, it said 585. So I'm wondering why it chose 86/88 in the first place. I know the internals are proprietary, but I'm curious because the only constraints I have are fastest route and freeways allow all. The only thing I can think of is that it considers there is more population along 90 and therefore more congestion making it slower. Any ideas? Thanks

    Shortest - 617 miles @ 11hr 30 min
    Fastest - 644 miles @ 11hr 54 min

I will have to pass on to Rand to have them look at. One statement you said that you needed to be on I-80 to avoid tolls, yet you stayed on I-90?

The TND does not take population or congestion into account in any calculations for routing, unless you have the traffic receiver and have set it accordingly.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I just pay the tolls myself as my primary interest is always the fastest route (total time, not necessarily mph). So I never had the intention of taking 80 (and understandably the 720 didn't route that way since I don't use "avoid tolls"). Everything worked out, I was just curious why it chose that way. Thanks.

A lot has to do with the internal router selections based upon the roads. All roads have a "cost" factor assigned to them. As soon as they can respond back from Rand then I will let you know.

    Thanks,

This happens a LOT with my TND710 - Fastest not actually being the fastest.

As for not taking population or congestion into account without the traffic receiver, can you explain how this correlates to the advertised Key Navigation Features?

    From the Rand web site:
TND710: Traffic Predictor: Integrates historic traffic patterns into routing (Available only on the TND 710)

I know that Ralph has the 720, but I'd expect that a later version would incorporate the features of the previous version, in this case the 710. You told me earlier that my TND710 did not have this feature, but the Rand web site says otherwise. Was this feature discontinued on the 720?

The 720 does not have Traffic Predictor. The Traffic Predictor simply looks at "past historical traffic" and based upon that you can see what routing is affected by traffic. It does not look at live traffic. I can put in a time/day of week and it will show me "Past" traffic for a certain city or area. I then can re-route myself or pick a later time to see how the traffic is affected.

If you run a traffic receiver it is based upon live traffic and you can set certain conditions for routing.

    Thanks,
    Mark
