Float the gears, easiest way to go. The only time I ever had to double clutch was with one of the old Macks with duplex trans. It had two sticks and the main trans wouldn't move unless you double clutched it.

    NOOOOOO! Not A two-stick Mack!

I attempted to drive one a while back (I have a friend with an old R dump), that was a disaster!!

It was an old "B" model Mack, set up as a tandem dump. A 2 spd auxiallry trans and a 5 speed main. It was really easy to forget what gear you were in. You had to hook your left arm through the steering wheel when you had to shift both sticks.

Oh OK. The R model I drove had a 5 and 3 ( I think, it has been a while) and I had the same problem. With more practice time I would have got it, but for the short non-joyride I took, keeping track of both sticks got the best of me!

5 and 3, that would be a triplex I think. There was also what they called a quadbox, but I never had the pleasure. There are a couple of good videos over on YouTube about driving a Mack with 2 sticks that are fun to watch.

Can't vote :( you didn't have enough choices.

I double sometimes, sometimes I don't. It depends on the load, the road, the grade, and how tight/new the gearbox is.

I have honestly never found a load, grade or gear box that I can't float.

I am not bragging but I have pulled 150,00lbs, done 20% grades and driven a truck with brand new transmission and never had a problem. BTW not all at the same time.

If ever I have needed to use the clutch which isn't very much it has been to release it out of a gear and then I float it into the next one.

I double clutch when really heavy, otherwise I single clutch in the lower deck and float in the upper.

I pretty much always float it. Once in awhile i bump the clutch to help get it out of gear. Once in awhile i double clutch is i have a passenger that asks about it!

Mostly float, but on occasion use the clutch... Nice to be able to do both, and know that the choice is mine to make...
