    Planet Fitness has 550 locations throughout the country. If you do the $20/month plan you can use any of their facilities anywhere in the country and you can bring a guest up to 10 times a month at no charge. If you do the $10/month plan you can go up to 10 times without additional charge, after that it's $5 per visit.

    When you say 'all gyms' do you mean just all 24hr Fitness or all gyms in general?

    I have to reply to this post. Looks like I will be going to OTR training soon and then OTR. I am a tennis player so I do get to the clubs on occasion for that. I'm friends with a number of personal trainers. I know one in particular, an ex-marine, who would always try to use your own weight for training. i.e. pull ups and push ups off from your equipment using your own weight instead of "lifting weights". The usual, lunges, sit ups, push ups do not need a gym, they really just need personal motivation. I intend to bring my racquet along with me. Hopefully if I get into one of those "wait" situations I might be able to find a brick building to hit the ball against every so often. The other thing trainers have always suggested was the interval training. So that walk across a long parking lot needs to be a jog or sprint for a short distance followed by walking and then sprinting again. Motivation is key and understanding you can start from any point in life. Even if you run only 10 or 20 steps, just doing it on a regular basis and then adding "reps" or distance will improve ones well being. Gyms and clubs are great and really a great investment "if you use them". I remember getting my first gps prior to a trip to florida. Grabbed a rental and that gps saved me so much time finding my way around, i think that gps probably paid for itself quickly as I found my way around more efficiently ultimately saving me time and fuel. So if you pay for a gym, it's only a good deal if you use it! Thats my opinion. For those not getting a gym membership, try some of those exercises, regardless of your current status. Even a little bit helps. I also intend to bring a couple of baseball gloves and a baseball and softball along with me. I'm guessing that most of us grew up being on a little league somewhere. Hoping to find a few drivers, when the weather is good, to throw the ball a little. I still enjoy 5 or 10 minutes of catch on occasion...it's exercise and you can imaging yourself playing with a favorite big league team for five minutes...I bet there are plenty of drivers who in the right mood wouldn't mind throwing the ball for five minutes to burn some time at a truck stop.

    And that is commendable..But here's the BUT; Working out OTR at a gym is difficult at best..As (although) I do not know how hard you will "run" the truck,in many instances you will need to get rid of the trailer in order to park at a gym.

    Also if you spend 3hrs a day loading/unloading and then drive for 11hrs-or say 600mi- eat and probably shower..You probably WILL NOT feel like a work-out as my guess is you will need some sleep also.

    You may see my age and figure I don't know what I'm talking about as at my age what could I know;O.K....For over 35yrs I enjoy nothing more than a good gym workout,as does a nephew of mine 26yrs old who is also a OTR Trucker. He has also told me it's difficult at best and if possible he "hits the gym" if one is available where he's at,but while on a 34hr reset.

    I am a member of SNAP Fitness BTW;and can count without reaching double digits the times I have had a chance and /or ambition to work out OTR this past year at a gym. However......................

    I personally carry a pair of 30lb dumbbells for high reps and a pair of 60lb for lower reps complimented with a short triceps bar with two 35lb plates. Plenty of room for those in the Truck,and when warmer-and if room on the deck- (flatbed) have a good ol workout outside. :) Once in awhile someone will ask to join (of course) all the more fun. Of course plenty just stare with a blank look on their face..Which is even MORE fun. :biggrin_2559:

    I suggest you pull a flatbed. You'll get a workout whether you like it or not, throwing tarps, slinging chains, and ratcheting winches and binders. If that isn't enough for you, just keep lifting those tarps until you're done. The most fundamental aspect of weight training is, and always will be "lift heavy things", and that doesn't mean swinging doors.

    It might not ever be an option for you, but if you can, drive a truck with air assist, or manual steering. That can be a workout in itself running around off the highways, or bumping tight docks, and I've got the forearm and shoulder muscles to prove it.

    Other than that, bodyweight exercises and calisthenics are going to be your bread and butter.

    I was just looking into this myself. I'm currently a member of LA Fitness and although they have clubs all over the U.S. they aren't everywhere I will be taking my hometime. I'm kind of a gym nut myself.

    However, I did find that there are a ton of "Planet Fitness" clubs. It's a national chain and apparently they like the colors purple and yellow unfortunately. Its on all their equipment.
    I'm going to join once I get out on the road so I can hit them on my days off. They are everywhere I'm going to be. Might be worth looking into them.

    Other things to consider doing when you've got the down time but no gym close by are jump rope, bring some dumbbells, pushup posts, dips off the steps, lunges, squats, etc. Use your gear bag full of whatever you have that is heavy for resistance if needed, i.e. some tricep extensions, upward rows, side/front lifts etc. You may not get a ton of isolation exercises in but you'll more likely be able to do some decent compound exercises even without the gym.

    And this. Good idea. Screw them lookin at you. If I ever see you working out on the flatbed I'm going to laugh first then I'm going to ask to join you!
