I live in Central Texas. 3.5 years OTR 53' dry box experience. Clean MVR. No tickets or accidents. Not interested in going home. Looking to make money. Although I have no car hauling experience, I understand its a challenging job. I'm will to put in the work.
Here are three companies which I'm struggling for a decision.
United Road (unitedroad.com) : Ft Worth terminal is not looking to train new drivers. Another terminal might hire and train me. There will most likely be an option to transfer to the Ft Worth terminal once I gain experience. Here's the major kicker. I have to goto Georgia for a final interview at my own expense. 800 mile journey. I'm looking at $350-$450 expense with no guarantee of a job.
JMN Logistics (jmnhaul.com): Company offers a free training program I believe in Missouri. It's 3.5 weeks long which I would have to pay for all expenses such as food and lodging. At the end of the training, there is a "possibility" of a job offer. I question why it takes 3.5 weeks to learn what I need to know. If the program is very comprehensive, it just might be worth it.
Texas Auto Carrier (texasautocarriers.com): I was told that they were willing to train. The company is based out of San Antonio. Drivers run primarily Texas and home on weekends. Pay is 25% of the load. I really am not looking to go home since home time doesn't pay. I like to hustle. I would rather run more states than one single state. I'll have to confirm if I would have to bring the truck to San Antonio for home time and would have to drive my car 200 miles to Central Texas.
I can not find much information about these companies from former or current drivers. Hopefully some here can provide me, as well as others, some insight of the above companies. Perhaps you might add another company I could evaluate?
Although I really want to learn all the in's and out's of auto hauling, I have two other companies to consider.
H&M Trucking (hmtrucking.com): its a grain company which pays a straight 38 cpm with quarterly bonuses of up to 3 cpm for meeting fuel stop/idle/routing criteria. Per Diem is earned through when i file my taxes. Randy Miller has been very friendly and projects a family like type business, unlike being a "valuable resource" from my former company. They do not have a terminal in Texas, but has many loads to Texas. One has to consider when/if truck has to be turned in, how to transport truck belongings from Omaha, NE to Texas.
Anderson Trucking (atsinc.com): Speciality flat bed trucking company willing to train. They haul those big windmill blades, but I would have to work my way up through certifications and load counts. Pay is 35 cpm with 6-30 cpm extra for over dimensional loads. Per Diem is earned through my filing of income tax. Pay is low, but I would be learning a lot from this company.
Well, that's what I'm working with for now. Comments/suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.
I thank you for your valued opinion and expertise.
Which Auto Carrier shall I chose?

I have 20 years as a driver and I am Third generation driver. I have 12 years car hauling experience and live in Texas. The company I am signed on with has 95 terminals in the lower 48 and the company has been in business over 50 years. Our main terminal is in Mesquite. You sound like me and the way I like to run. Currently my wife rides with me but doesn't drive. She wants to come off the road and I have been looking for someone to team up with. Preferably someone I can train so I know that you will know how to do the job correctly. If interested PM me as I don't have the required 7 posts in order to write to you.

I dont know if any of these companies train or if they are even worth working for, but I see these guys all of the time at the railheads in Ft. Worth and Mesquite.
GST
Waggoners
JJR
I see others but I have gone blank. -
i worked for jmn before the "training" classes began. I would avoid them if possible. they are right in the middle of a union coming in so id hold off till its resolved one way or the other to see if they will be around much longer. i know of three people fired over this already 2 mechanics and one driver who were the ones that contacted the union the have 3 trucks staged in texas and 3 in nc/fla area other then that they keep most of the big trucks in st louis along with the little trucks.

Hansen & Adkins was doing the Ford work at the UP Mesquite railhead.
Term. Mgr. Bob Pitts. Good guy. Go see him. The Safety Dir. is Barry Williams, another good guy.
Not sure if they are hiring. Been awhile since I have spoken to either. -
Thanks for the reply. I never thought about team driving for car hauling. I might be interested in this option.
